(Excerpt from my latest newsletter)

Blue Monday isn’t the problem. It’s the signal.

January has a way of stripping everything back.

The festive noise has gone quiet.
The days are short.
The credit card bills arrive.
Motivation feels thin.

And somewhere in that stillness, a question surfaces for a lot of people:

“Is this it? Is this what my life is going to look like for the foreseeable future?”

That’s why people talk about Blue Monday. Not because one date has mystical power, but because it reflects something real. A collective pause where tiredness, pressure, and quiet anxiety come to the surface.

This newsletter exists for one reason:
to help people create a different life, not through reckless exits, but through small, intentional steps, taken consistently, until options appear.

And I want to start with a truth that reshaped how I see work, security, and choice.

The myth of job security

For a long time, I believed responsibility equalled safety.
I ran a school.
I carried serious accountability.
I managed a £2 million budget.
The job mattered.

It mattered to children, to staff, to families, to the wider community.

Then I found myself involved in redundancy decisions.

Not because people weren’t good enough.
Not because they didn’t care.
Not because they hadn’t given everything.

But because decisions were being made at a level above any individual.

That’s when the illusion cracked.

You can be excellent at what you do. You can be loyal, committed, and deeply invested. And still have no control over outcomes.

That realisation isn’t just professional, it’s emotional. Because work isn’t only income. It’s identity. Stability. A sense of being “safe”.

Blue Monday often hurts because it exposes that fragility.

Why one income stream is the real risk. Most people think risk looks like leaving. Often, the bigger risk is staying dependent on a single source for everything.

One income stream is one point of failure.

If budgets tighten.
If leadership changes.
If priorities shift.
If your health changes.
If life throws something unexpected at you.

You can find yourself trapped, not because you made bad choices, but because you didn’t have alternatives.

This is not about quitting your job.
It’s about creating options quietly, in the background, so you’re never forced into a decision you didn’t choose, on a day you didn’t plan.

Pole, pole: the blueprint for change

When I climbed Kilimanjaro, the guides repeated a phrase constantly:

Pole, pole.
Slowly, slowly.

That’s how you reach the summit.
Not by sprinting.
Not by panicking.
Not by trying to do everything in one burst of motivation.

One step. Then another.

That’s also how you change your life. Don’t obsess over the summit. Focus on the step in front of you.

Most people don’t fail because change is impossible.
They fail because they stop walking.

Consistency beats motivation every time.
Small steps compound quietly.
One day you look up and realise you’re no longer where you started.

A personal example: when Mondays change
I’m a Manchester City fan and always have been.

January Mondays used to feel heavy. Get through today. Get through the week. Repeat.

But by building a side project alongside my teaching role, slowly and deliberately, something shifted.

Eventually, Monday stopped feeling like a sentence.

I could travel.
Follow my team.
Come back without that knot in my stomach.

That wasn’t luck.
That was choices.
That’s what small steps create.

So if Blue Monday feels heavy for you, hear this clearly:
you don’t need a miracle.
You need a plan.
And you need movement.

Identity determines altitude
Everyone wears the same kit.
Not everyone climbs with the same belief.

You will never consistently outperform the story you tell yourself.

“I’m not confident.”
“I’m bad with money.”
“I’m not a leader.”
“I’m too old.”

Try flipping them:

“I’m learning to communicate.”
“I’m becoming financially literate.”
“I’m developing leadership skills.”
“I’m more experienced. I know what matters.”

Choose one identity statement for this year and repeat it until it becomes normal.

“I’m the kind of person who finishes what I start.”

Identity shapes behaviour.
Behaviour shapes results.

No one climbs alone
On Kilimanjaro, the porters carried more than bags.

They carried belief.
They watched breathing.
They noticed energy dips.
They encouraged us when we were cold, quiet, and close to quitting.

Life works the same way. Most people don’t need more advice.
They need encouragement.
They need the right environment.
They need the right people.

If you’re exhausted right now, it might not be the climb. It might be who you’re climbing with.

Momentum is fragile.

Choose your circle carefully.

One year from now
One year from now, you’ll still be on your climb.

The only question is whether you’ll be higher up, or standing in the same place.

This is why I wrote From the Classroom to the Climb.
Not to promote reckless exits, but to offer a blueprint for steady transformation.

Your next step

If this resonated on Blue Monday, reply and tell me three things:

1. What climb are you on right now?
2. What is one small step you’ll take this week?
3. What label are you dropping this year, and what are you replacing it with?

Pole, pole.
Slowly, slowly.

Small steps. Better choices. A different life.

Yesterday morning, a mix of nerves and excitement filled the room as my son and I sat down, ready to tackle the Manchester City ticket line.

Now, if you know, you know, doing it online can feel like a lottery. You’re often thousands in the queue. But this time, I must’ve timed it just right. After a tense wait, we managed to grab tickets for some of the biggest matches of the season: Man United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Aston Villa… you name it.

But this post isn’t really about football. It’s about something else.

Over 20 years ago, in the middle of a stressful season of life, as deputy headteacher, with high pressure, poor health, and feeling completely drained, I wrote a goal in my diary.

The goal?
“Escape this role… and spend more time doing what matters.”
One of those “matters” was this: pursuing my passion and following my team with Manchester City with my son James.

Back then, we couldn’t afford the time or the tickets. But I started something on the side. A little business I built in the cracks of a busy life. It took time, but it grew. It gave me options. It gave me breathing space.

And 10 years ago, I achieved that goal. I left headship. And ever since, I’ve been able to not only follow my team up and down the country (and into Europe) but more importantly, I’ve been able to share those moments with my son.

Why?
Because I didn’t want history to repeat itself. I didn’t get that time with my own father — so I made it a mission to create it with my own son.

If you’ve got a passion or a dream buried beneath the busyness of life, don’t give up on it. Don’t accept that where you are is where you’ll always be.

You can change the story. Don’t bury your dream, bury those excuses!

That’s what my new book is all about — ‘From the Classroom to the Climb’ — coming out in August. It shares the lessons, setbacks, breakthroughs and options that helped me (and many others) rewrite our paths. Www.derek-thomas/get-my-book

Because it’s never too late to go after the things that matter.

I popped into a garden centre for a quiet coffee today… And got served (sort of) by a Robot Cat! 😺🤖
It cruised over to the table, asked diners to take their food, and politely wished them “Enjoy your meal!”

The children were fascinated, customers were snapping photos — and the staff? I’m not quite so sure! Who could blame them?

I don’t want to make a meal of it but AI isn’t coming. It’s already here, rolling between tables.

Would you be happy being served by a robot?

Mastering Goal Setting: Your Roadmap to Success

Goal setting is a powerful way to focus on your ideal future and turn dreams into reality. While many people struggle with it, a clear strategy can make all the difference. Here are five practical tips to set and achieve your goals:

🎯Think Big:
Start by defining the bigger picture. What do you truly want? Be clear about your vision, whether it’s starting a business or buying a home.

🎯Write It Down:
Putting your goals in writing solidifies your commitment. It also helps you track progress and stay motivated.

🎯Break It Down:
Big goals can be overwhelming, so divide them into smaller, manageable tasks. For instance, training for a marathon starts with shorter runs and builds gradually.

🎯Prioritise and Stay Flexible:
Tackle smaller tasks in order of importance but remain adaptable as circumstances change.

🎯Review Regularly:
Weekly reviews keep you on track, highlight progress, and allow adjustments.

Setbacks are inevitable but focusing on the bigger picture will keep you moving forward. Celebrate your wins, learn from challenges, and use each experience to fuel future success.

After working with thousands of pupils and business partners over the last 39 years, both as a headteacher and an entrepreneur, I’ve observed a common winning formula time and time again.

(P x P) + (G x D) = MS

The most successful businesses owners demonstrate all of these elements in abundance.

(Purpose x Passion) + (Grit x Determination) = Massive Success

Leading the drive before everything else is your PURPOSE.

For those interested, there is a brilliant book which covers this topic beautifully, written by Sir Ken Robinson, called ‘The Element’. It talks about doing that ‘thing’ which like the element of a kettle, warms you up from the inside. It’s when people say,

‘He or she’s is in their Element!”

As a new term starts for pupils and teachers across the UK I started to reflect as it's actually my 10 year anniversary since I left school! The last decade seems to have whizzed by in a flash! 10 years ago I was working as the headmaster of a Primary School in Cardiff and stressed to the limit! My family life was full on and I was also developing a part time business as one of 20 million people in the UK who have become Miis (Muliti Income Individuals) trying to earn extra income to keep up with my family’s ever increasing expending!

The one thing I wasn’t doing was taking care of myself. My life was a constant juggling act, trying to keep all the balls in the air! It was inevitable that soon I was going to drop one or two!!!
10 years ago my part time business allowed me to give up my stressful teaching job and I felt on top of the world! (We were actually in Las Vegas at a business event).

Then like a true helter skelter ride I came flying back down at lightening speed. After years of self abuse (bad diet, little exercise and no rest) I became seriously ill. It totally knocked me off my feet and suddenly Mr. Invincible had become Mr. Vulnerable overnight. I became really depressed and was at a real low in my life. It just didn’t seem fair. I blamed everyone else but
myself!

After 12 months of moping around I finally decided to take responsibility for my situation. I made some BIG changes and set some really tough goals.

Lose some weight!
Fuel myself with qualify food
Get my thinking sorted
Push on with my Business
Create amazing memories

My health would be my new wealth.

I invested in a well-being coach and signed up with a personal trainer. It wasn’t cheap but I had been neglecting just how valuable health is for far too long!
This has been the best investment ever. I lost weight (3st), became fitter than I have ever been and developed a new energy that has helped me massively in my part-time business. My promotion would have been inconceivable with making these changes. Last month with the help of an amazing support team I was able to summit Kilimanjaro, the tallest free standing mountain in the world!

The one thing I have learned over the last decade is how much I appreciate my home. I’m not talking about my house. I’m referring to the amazing body we are all given to live in. After all it’s the only one we get!!

My challenge over the next decade is one of maintenance and growth and helping others achieve their own personal goals.

What small changes would you like to make over the next few years that your future self will thank you for? Why do this? Because you are worth it. Make the next decade count! Time really does go by in a flash.

Two years ago I attended a Leadership event run by Robin and Cal Brooks in Oswestry, Shropshire. The guest Speakers that day were John & Arlene Chart. Their talk left a huge impact not only on myself but on everyone in the room. John shared the story of his fight against MND (Multi Neurones Disease). A disease that there is no real cure for and has such a devastating impact on the human body.

What really shone through that day were John & Arlene’s resolve and determination to do everything in their power to raise awareness of the disease. It inspired many in the room to think of ways in which they could help raise funds to help with a research project being carried out by Jemeen Sreedharan at Kings College in London.

On 28th June Mark Oakley and I will be taking on the challenge of climbing Kilimanjaro. I can’t say I’m not nervous about the prospect of climbing the highest ‘free standing mountain’ in the world without oxygen, but we are going to give it our best shot! The Uhuru Peak lies in Tanzania’s National Park and is 5895m above sea level.

This is also a personal quest for Mark as he lost his father to this dreadful disease. We would both really appreciate your help and support help us raise funds for this very worthwhile cause.
