Why PR (and why it’s worth your time)

PR = someone else talking about you. And that’s powerful, because people trust it more than ads. A media mention does three things at once:

• Builds credibility (“they must be legit”)
• Extends your reach beyond your own channels
• Creates content you can reuse everywhere (site, sales, social)

PR works best when it’s:
• Relevant (tied to something happening now)
• Human (about people, not features)
• Consistent (small stories often, not one big splash)

You don’t need a huge launch or budget. You just need something useful to say. PR compounds. One article leads to another. One quote builds authority.

Want help finding those stories?
JournoLink shows you what journalists are already asking for — so you can plug into real opportunities instead of guessing.

Is AI the death of the PR relationship? Not if you’re using it right.

Over 75% of PR professionals now use generative AI in their daily workflows. It’s an incredible tool for efficiency—handling research, monitoring trends, and structuring drafts in seconds. But efficiency isn't the same as impact.

As our inboxes fill up with automated templates, journalists are hitting a breaking point with "AI fatigue." Relying too heavily on automation risks brand erosion and, worse, getting blocked by the very people you’re trying to build relationships with.

The most successful comms strategies rely on a "Human-in-the-Loop" approach:
✅ Let AI handle the syntax: Use it for research, data analysis, and initial structural drafts.
✅ Let humans own the strategy: Inject the empathy, emotional hooks, and personal nuances that bots simply can't replicate.

Trust is built through transparency and mutual respect, not prompt sequences. Let’s use AI to clear the clutter, not replace the connection.

Over the past few years, artificial intelligence has evolved from an experimental tech demo into standard operating procedure for modern communications. Recent industry benchmarks reveal that over 75%...

The PR Diary: Week commencing 31 August

Bought your Christmas tree yet? No? You’d better get a move on. Christmas is apparently just around the corner. And this week, the news agenda starts changing gear.

The MPs are back — refreshed, suntanned and presumably already wondering who’s getting reshuffled. Political journalists will be hungry, so businesses with something sensible to say about the economy, regulation or what’s happening on the ground should be getting their stories ready.

Schools are back too, which means journalists will be looking for stories about uniforms, lunches, the 11+, childcare and teachers being asked to perform miracles before lunchtime. If you’ve got a story, this is the week to tell it.

And tomorrow officially marks the start of autumn. Halloween and Christmas are already fighting for shelf space, but local journalists would much rather see what your local shops and businesses are doing.

For food businesses, it’s Organic September — expect demand for wonky carrots and anything vaguely wholesome.

Cycling takes centre stage on Wednesday with the Tour of Britain, while September is also Prostate Cancer Awareness Month — both offering opportunities for useful expert and human-interest stories.

And finally, Blackpool Illuminations light up on Friday. Just think, from eight arc lights in 1879 to six miles of sparkle and glitter today.

See you there. I’ll be the one avoiding the candyfloss.

Did you know that the "father of modern PR" was Sigmund Freud's nephew?

In the 1920s, Edward Bernays revolutionised communications by taking his uncle's theories on human psychology and applying them to mass public persuasion.

Before Bernays, PR was mostly simple press agentry—getting names in the paper through announcements or stunts. Bernays shifted the game by focusing on subconscious desire and behavioral psychology.

Instead of pitching features, he engineered cultural moments:
• The Problem: In the 1920s, it was culturally taboo for women to smoke in public.
• The PR Move: Bernays hired women to march in New York's 1929 Easter Parade while lighting up cigarettes—which he framed to the press as "Torches of Freedom" symbolising women's independence.
• The Result: Smoking among women skyrocketed, and the taboo vanished almost overnight.

The takeaway for modern communicators?

Great PR rarely comes down to pushing a product's specs or issuing a dry press release. It works best when it hooks into culture, addresses human emotion, and shapes narrative around genuine human motivation.

PR Tiop: Stop pitching your news. Pitch the problem.

Nobody cares that your company "is thrilled to announce a new product." They care about the pain point it solves.

Hook journalists with a fresh trend, a shocking stat, or a real human impact—and position your brand as the solution.

Happy International Dog Day! 🐾

Every August 26th, social feeds get flooded with dog photos. But if your PR strategy stops at a cute Instagram story, you’re missing out on real media coverage and brand affinity.

Here is how to do it:

1. Tie It to Purpose, Not Just Pictures
Media outlets rarely cover a brand just because its employees love dogs. Pitch a cause-driven story: host a shelter drive, donate a percentage of sales to a local rescue, or announce a pet-friendly workplace policy. Purpose gives journalists a "why now?" hook.

2. Leverage the "Office Dogs" Business Hook
For B2B or corporate PR, zoom out. Use the day to pitch thought leadership on workplace culture, employee mental health benefits, or pet-inclusive HR policies.

3. Create Pitch-Ready Assets
High-res visuals are mandatory. Have high-quality imagery of your products, team, or shelter partners organized in a accessible press folder before sending pitches.

4. Don't Force It
If pet culture doesn't fit your brand, don't force a weak connection. Authentic PR always beats trend-chasing.

How is your brand celebrating International Dog Day this year?

The "September Reset" is here

The late-summer transition isn't just about school supplies; it's a total psychological and operational reset for consumers and professionals alike. From "summer Fridays" back to Q3/Q4 productivity, this window is a goldmine for earned media—if you know how to pitch it.

The biggest mistake? Limiting your narrative to just students and parents. To cut through the noise, you need to broaden your angle:

• Go beyond the backpack: Connect with working professionals, teachers, and young adults through productivity hacks and wellness routines.
• Tap into the "September Reset": Position your brand as a supportive guide for those navigating the mix of transition anxiety and motivation for goal setting.
• Lead with value: Editors are drowning in pitches. Differentiate yours with original consumer data or expert commentary that solves a specific problem.

The PR Diary: Week commencing 24 August

Here’s the question I’d really like to see at the top of the business news this week:
What cost for small companies has gone up by an astonishing 284% in two years?
Answer at the end. No cheating.

Meanwhile, there’s plenty going on for businesses to get their teeth into.

🎓 It’s peak university shopping week, with up to £250m being spent. And, rather wonderfully, Tuesday is National Secondhand Wardrobe Day. Cue stories about students, budgets, sustainability and the price of looking vaguely respectable on campus.

🏕️ Politics will focus on Angela Rayner’s plans for more authorised traveller sites, and Shabana Mahmood’s plans for asylum accommodation outside the usual hotspots. Plenty of opportunities for businesses in property, planning, construction and local economies to have their say.

🧠 Brian Cox and Benedict Cumberbatch both have birthdays. Two of Britain’s biggest brains in the same week. Could they spare an hour to explain what’s going on with the economy?

📱 Meta will also be under the spotlight. A potential £1.4 trillion US penalty could have rather interesting consequences for Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp – and therefore for businesses that depend on them.

🎄 And it’s Northern Christmas Week, celebrating northern businesses. The first Christmas-tree seller to contact JournoLink this week gets a free annual subscription. We like festive PR.

Then there’s inflation. The latest figure is already 2.9%, and with food prices rising after the heatwaves, fuel costs climbing and Ofgem announcing new electricity rates on Wednesday, there’s a very good chance the next number won’t make anyone feel Christmassy.

Oh, and the answer to that eye watering inflation question for small companies at the top?
Companies House Confirmation Statements. They were £13 in 2024. Up now to £50 in 2026. Can it really be our own “Backing Business” Government that owns Companies House?

Right, as I’m in Yorkshire, I’m off to buy a Christmas tree.

Ever wonder why a world-famous encyclopedia of weird human achievements shares a name with a heavy Irish stout? 🍺

Turns out, it wasn’t a massive corporate pivot. It was the ultimate "I’m not wrong, you’re wrong" moment that accidentally became the greatest PR stunt of all time.

🔷 The year: 1951.
🔷 The hero: Sir Hugh Beaver, Managing Director of Guinness.
🔷 The crisis: He missed a shot at a golden plover while hunting, likely blamed his gear, and then got into a heated argument over whether it was Europe’s fastest game bird.

Because Google was about 47 years away, nobody could settle it. That’s when Sir Hugh had a revelation. Every single night, thousands of people in pubs were getting three pints deep and furiously arguing over ridiculous, unverified trivia.

His genius PR play?

🔷 Hire twin fact-checkers Norris and Ross McWhirter to build a book of ultimate extremes.
🔷 Ship it to pubs for FREE.
🔷 Watch patrons use it to settle bar bets while drinking more Guinness.

The book wasn't meant to be a retail empire; it was meant to be a glorified coaster that kept people in pub seats longer. Instead, it became an instant bestseller—and now, decades later, brands literally pay Guinness to let them bake the world's largest lasagna just for a press release.

The marketing lesson: If your product pairs well with drunk arguments, build the ultimate referee. 😏
