When somebody first speaks to me about a website, colours are rarely the useful place to start.

I want to know what the business is trying to change, where enquiries come from, what customers keep asking and which parts of the current setup are making life harder.

Those answers make the design decisions much easier. The website can solve the right problem before it tries to look impressive.

A Wonderful Journey had a lot of story to hold together.

Years of family history, film, music and fundraising needed one clearer home without losing the personality behind it. Richard also wanted a WordPress site he could keep updating himself after launch.

It was lovely to see that combination reflected in his review.

Most good website projects get clearer before they get prettier.

The early work is understanding what the business needs people to know, what customers keep asking and which action matters most. Once that is settled, the design has something useful to support.

That thinking is a large part of every Rowe Creative build.

Making a website feel easy to use normally takes quite a lot of careful decision-making behind the scenes.

With Snippers & Clippers, Tracey knew the feeling she wanted the business to have. My job was to listen properly, turn that into a clear site and make the process manageable rather than burying her in technical decisions.

I’m really pleased that the patience and support stood out in her feedback. A client should understand what’s being built and feel comfortable asking questions all the way through.

Some of the most useful website work is almost invisible once it’s finished.

For Tamzin Reid Coaching, the public pages are only the front of the system. Behind them sit application forms, programme information, welcome emails, course access and automated sequences that move people through the right steps without everything needing to be handled manually.

Good automation shouldn’t feel robotic to the person receiving it. It should simply make the experience clearer for the client and remove repetitive admin from the business.

This is the tidier-looking side of web design. The screen just outside the photograph normally contains a much less glamorous mix of notes, half-finished headings and far too many tabs.

A surprising amount of the job happens before the visual design: sorting information, understanding the business, planning the page order and deciding what somebody needs to see before they feel ready to enquire.

Once that thinking is right, the design tends to come together much more naturally.

Specialist services often come with a lot that needs explaining. With WL Hydrotherapy, the challenge was to present the private pool hire, accessible facilities and practical information clearly, while keeping the website welcoming rather than clinical or overwhelming.

Jill’s feedback means a great deal because patience and listening are a big part of getting that balance right. The design matters, but so does making sure the owner feels heard throughout the process and confident in the finished site.

A page can look perfect on a large screen and still be frustrating on a phone.

Headings wrap differently, buttons move, images take up more space and long forms suddenly feel much longer. That matters when most people are trying to browse quickly with one thumb rather than sitting at a desk.

A useful test is to open your own website on your phone and try to complete the main action — book, enquire or buy — without zooming in or turning the screen sideways. Any point where you have to stop and think is worth improving.

Eleanor Read Garden Design needed a website that felt calm, considered and visually led — but visitors still needed to understand the service without hunting for information.

The design uses space, natural imagery and restrained typography to reflect Eleanor’s work, with a clearer structure underneath to guide people through the portfolio and towards making contact.

It’s a nice reminder that simple-looking websites are rarely the result of simply removing things. The real work is deciding what deserves to stay.

This is exactly what I hoped to achieve with Tamzin’s website.

Her work is personal, distinctive and difficult to squeeze into a generic template. The job was to draw out what made her approach different, then turn it into something clear and professional without losing her personality in the process.

Since the original build, the work has grown into forms, programme pages, payments, welcome emails and course automations too. A good website should be something a business can grow through, rather than a finished page that gets forgotten.
