Thinking of buying a laptop for Christmas? Please read this first.

Every January we see the same thing. Someone's bought a cheap laptop online, often a brand nobody's heard of, and it's already a problem. Hinges snapping, keys falling off, chargers dying, and so slow it takes ages just to open a web page.

They look like a bargain, but most are built as cheaply as possible, with barely enough memory or storage to run Windows. A lot of them don't last a year, and many can't be repaired or upgraded because the parts are soldered in.

Spending a bit more on a decent laptop from a proper brand almost always works out cheaper in the long run.

Did your banking app stop working on Tuesday? A power problem at one of Google's data centres in London knocked lots of UK services offline for most of the day. Revolut was hit, and Lloyds, HSBC and Halifax customers reported problems. It's all working again now.

Now the scammers have moved in. Which? says they're using it to pretend to be banks. If a text, email or call about "the outage" asks you to confirm details or move money, don't reply. Ring your bank on the number on the back of your card, or call 159.

Remember the laptop with the squishy ball gel in the fan?
That was Danielle's. Her laptop kept shutting itself down, which isn't ideal when you need it for uni and work. The gel had worked its way into the fan, so it couldn't cool itself properly.
We had it cleaned out and back with her in under 24 hours, and Danielle has kindly left us this review. Thank you Danielle, and good luck with uni!

People often ask what we use in the workshop, so here's one.

These are the monitors on our benches. They're 22 inch, really sharp, and the picture is lovely and smooth. We look at screens all day, so if they weren't good, we'd know about it!

They plug straight into most computers and laptops (HDMI or the older VGA), so they're ideal if you work from home and want a second screen, or your old monitor's on its way out.

Still using Windows 10? There's been a lot of confusion this week, so here's the short version.

Microsoft stopped normal support for Windows 10 last October. Since then, the only way to keep getting security updates has been to sign up for their Extended Security Updates.

That was meant to finish this week. Microsoft has now pushed it back to 12 October 2027.

So if you signed up, you're covered for now, but there's less than a year left. If you never signed up, your computer hasn't had any security updates for a year, and that's a risk every time you go online.

A Lib Dem London Assembly Member went on LBC last week and suggested tradespeople could use a bike instead of a van to carry their tools and materials.

This got us thinking. If tradespeople can carry their tools and materials by bike, why can’t we use one to pick up and drop off customers’ computers and laptops?

We’ve trialled it today and it’s been an outstanding success.

We’ll be reviewing the data and may roll it out across Cannock.
