"We would provide ASL if we could. We just cannot staff it."

Sound familiar? 👀

Around 1 million Americans use ASL as their first language. There are only about 10,000 certified interpreters. That gap shows up exactly where you'd expect: overnight, breaking news, short-notice events.

We're sharing how Signapse and SyncWords are working to close some of those gaps, why human interpreters remain essential, and how Deaf translators are shaping every part of this technology.

What accessibility gaps have you noticed most? Tell us below. 👇

73% of users with accessibility needs leave websites that don't work for them 💙

That's the reality for so many in the Deaf community every single day.
Here are a few quick ways websites can do better:

👉 Add captions and sign language translation to video content
👉 Make sure the site works with screen readers
👉 Check colour contrast for visual accessibility
👉 Add sign language translation so Deaf users can access content in their first language

Small changes. Big difference. 🤝

We don’t take your trust for granted. Not for a single second 🤝

When the Deaf community engages with our technology, they are placing trust in us to represent their language accurately, respectfully and in a way that reflects the culture and nuance that makes sign language what it is.

Sign language isn’t just words. It’s identity. It’s community. It’s history ⭐
And we understand the weight of that.

In this clip, Elsie speaks about the impact Signapse’s products have on the Deaf community and the responsibility that comes with being a part of creating this technology.

We know what is at stake, and we know that getting it right matters far more than getting it out quickly.

POV: Travis 💭

Next up in our POV: Through Our Hands series, we have Travis Dougherty.

Travis is our Chief Experience Officer at Signapse meaning he is responsible for ensuring our products meet the needs of the Deaf community in the US and beyond. Not only that, but Travis is also Chair of the National Association of State Relay Administration.

His unique experience and perspective helps us shape our technology into products that serve the Deaf community.

We asked Travis how Signapse fits into everyday communication and this was his answer 👆

On-demand is finally getting BSL rules 👀

The Media Act 2024 means streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney+ now have to hit real targets for BSL content, not just subtitles. It’s taken years of campaigning to get here.

But here’s the catch: there are only around 1,500 qualified BSL interpreters for 87,000 BSL users.

With the demand about to grow and a workforce not growing nearly as quickly, it has left people asking, “what happens next?” 🤔

We’ve answered the biggest questions in our latest blog.

From what it means for the Deaf community to how broadcasters can react and how tech can help relieve some pressure off interpreters, you can find everything you need to know in our blog ➡️ https://eu1.hubs.ly/H0xp40M0

What’s been your experience with BSL access on streaming so far? How do you think things could be improved? We want to know your thoughts!

Accessibility standards are changing due to the Media Act 2024. Learn what broadcasters and VOD platforms need to do next and how Signapse can help.

We’ve been busy!

▶️ 3,409 SignStudio translations.
📹 294,435 SignStream videos generated.
📖 Over 1.5 million words translated through SignStream.

But more than the numbers, that’s 1.5 million words that were accessible to Deaf people who deserved access to them all along.

This is why we do what we do. And we’re not stopping there.

Think about the last time you were at the train station 🚆

Announcements over the tannoy, last-minute platform changes, disruption updates - for most passengers it’s background noise. For Deaf BSL users, it’s information that’s simply out of reach.

Sign language translation in train stations changes that. Real-time, accessible information for every passenger. No asking for help, no missing out. Just an equal experience.

Swipe through the carousel to see exactly where you can find our Digital Signers ➡️
