The latest cyber attacks don't always involve breaking into systems. Sometimes, they involve convincing people to open the door.

Microsoft has warned about attacks where criminals pose as IT support while triggering genuine authentication requests on a user's account. The person sees a real Microsoft prompt on their screen and is told they need to approve it to fix a problem.

That's what makes the attack so convincing. The notification is genuine. The attacker is simply exploiting a legitimate process and persuading the user to cooperate.
Once approved, criminals can reset passwords, lock users out of accounts and start accessing company data.

MFA remains one of the best security measures available, but it's only effective if people understand what they're approving. A real notification doesn't always mean a real request.

Have you noticed more websites asking you to create a passkey instead of a password?

Companies such as Google, Microsoft and Apple are making passkeys a standard sign-in option.

So, what is a passkey? Rather than typing a password, your device proves it's you using your fingerprint, face, or device PIN. There's nothing to remember, reuse, or accidentally hand over to a phishing site.

With many cyber attacks still starting with stolen login details, passkeys offer a simpler and more secure way to sign in.

If passkeys are available on the services you use, they're well worth enabling.

There are currently 3.5 million people living with cancer in the UK, with a new diagnosis every 75 seconds. The impact of cancer extends far beyond the diagnosis itself, affecting the lives of family, friends and colleagues too.

As a team, we've seen first-hand the difference Macmillan can make and understand how valuable their support, guidance and reassurance can be during some of life's most challenging moments.

Could you spot a fake CAPTCHA?

You've probably encountered them hundreds of times while browsing the web. They're the little security checks that ask you to tick a box, identify images or complete a quick challenge before accessing a website or submitting a form.

Because CAPTCHAs are so familiar, most of us complete them without a second thought. Unfortunately, cybercriminals are now taking advantage of that trust.

A growing scam involves fake CAPTCHA pages that ask users to send a text message to "verify" they're human. In reality, the message may be sent to a premium or international number, leading to unexpected charges.

The key thing to remember is that a legitimate CAPTCHA should never ask you to send an SMS, make a phone call, or download software.

Unless youโ€™ve paid for the extra year of support (which runs until October 2026), Windows 10 is no longer supported by Microsoft. That means no security updates or patches, leaving your device and data at risk. Cyber criminals are aware of this and actively look for these gaps to gain access to unsecured systems.
