Tech Tip: Don't Store Important Files Only on Your Desktop

Is your desktop full of important documents, spreadsheets, photos, and customer files?

While it might be convenient, storing important files only on your desktop can be risky. If your computer fails, is lost, stolen, or hit by ransomware, those files could disappear in an instant.

Always store files in OneDrive, SharePoint, or another cloud backup solution
Think of your desktop as a workspace, not a filing cabinet.

Is your computer suddenly taking longer to start or perhaps freezing unexpectedly? Is it displaying strange pop-ups or running hotter than normal?

These are often early warning signs of hardware failure, malware, or storage issues.

Don't wait until it stops working completely. Early intervention usually means lower repair costs and less downtime.

Myth: More Bars on Wi‑Fi Means Faster Internet

Wi‑Fi bars only show the strength of the signal between your device and your router. They don't measure your actual internet speed.

Even with a full signal, your connection can still feel slow because of:
Internet provider issues
Network congestion
Too many devices connected
Background downloads or updates
An older router

Quick Tip: If your internet feels sluggish, run a speed test before blaming the Wi‑Fi signal. The issue may not be your wireless connection at all.

Deepfake Scams: Could Your Staff Spot One?

What if your next "urgent request" wasn't from your boss at all?

Deepfake technology is becoming increasingly convincing, allowing cybercriminals to create realistic fake videos, voice messages, and phone calls that appear to come from trusted colleagues, suppliers, or senior leadership.

Imagine receiving:
A voicemail from your Managing Director asking for an urgent payment
A video call from a client requesting sensitive information
A voice note from a colleague asking you to reset a password

The problem? It might not be them but how can you tell?

Verify unusual requests through a separate communication channel
Be cautious of urgent payment or data requests
Train staff to question unexpected messages, even from familiar voices
Implement security controls such as MFA and approval processes

Cyber security isn't just about spotting suspicious emails anymore. As deepfake technology evolves, staff awareness is becoming one of your strongest lines of defence.

Do you think you could tell the difference between a real call and a deepfake?

Many people imagine cyber attacks taking days or weeks to cause damage. The reality? The first 10 minutes can be enough for attackers to gain access, steal data, spread malware, or compromise multiple systems.

Minute 1: A malicious email is opened or a compromised account is accessed.
Minutes 2-3: Attackers begin exploring the environment, identifying users, devices, and valuable data.
Minutes 4-6: Privileges may be escalated, allowing wider access across systems and networks.
Minutes 7-8: Sensitive information can start being copied, encrypted, or prepared for exfiltration.
Minutes 9-10: The attack spreads, backups may be targeted, and business disruption begins.

The good news? Fast detection and response can stop an attack before it becomes a full-scale incident. That's why businesses should have:

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Regular security awareness training
Endpoint protection and monitoring
Secure backups
An incident response plan

Cybersecurity isn't just about prevention, it's about how quickly you can spot and contain a threat.

Myth: Macs Cannot Get Viruses

You’ve probably heard it before: “I’ve got a Mac, so I don’t need antivirus.”

The truth is, Macs absolutely can get viruses and other types of malware.

For years, Macs were seen as “safer” because fewer people used them, so attackers focused on Windows instead. Apple built strong security features into macOS and marketing reinforced the idea of being virus-proof. But that never meant Macs were immune, just less targeted at the time.

Things have changed:

Macs are now widely used in business and everyday life. Cybercriminals are actively targeting macOS. MacOS does have some very strong built-in protection, but it is not fool-proof with attackers often rely on tricking users rather than breaking the system itself.

We suggest treating your Mac like any other device:
Keep it updated
Be cautious with downloads and email attachments
Use antivirus or endpoint protection
Train users (especially in business environments)

Don’t click. Think first.

Phishing emails are getting smarter but that doesn’t mean you have to fall for them. Before you click any link, download an attachment, or reply to a message, take a second to pause and ask:

Does this look right?
Was I expecting this email?
Is the sender genuine… or just pretending?

Cybercriminals rely on rushed decisions and distractions. Even one click can put your business data at risk. Always hover over links before clicking and check sender addresses carefully.

When in doubt, don’t click, report it. Your team is your first line of defence. A little caution goes a long way.

Did you know?

Phishing emails are linked to over 90% of successful cyber attacks.

Most cyber incidents don’t start with hackers breaking in, they start with someone clicking an email.
