In a statement, it stressed it was "still supplying safe water to all of our Water and South Staffs Water customers".

"This is thanks to the robust systems and controls over water supply and quality we have in place at all times as well as the quick work of our teams to respond to this incident and implement the additional measures we have put in place on a precautionary basis."

Google users have been warned of a new campaign in which people searching for popular websites are instead redirected to scam sites by malicious adverts.

Searches for some of the most popular websites were found to produce adverts that had been crafted to appear as if they were legitimate links to the desired website, with some appearing as the first listing on a results page.

More than £50 million was lost last year to scams where victims are tricked into handing over control of their computer or smartphone to criminals.

New data from , the national reporting centre for fraud and , reveals that 20,144 people fell victim to scams where they were persuaded to grant criminals remote access to their device.

Victims reported losing a total of £57,790,384 – an average loss of £2,868 per victim.
