Specialising in full restorations and customisation. I meticulously restore pianos from repairs to factory fresh restorations. I work with multiple suppliers around the world in order to get the correct period look, parts which are unavailable are reproduced.

I figured it’s been a while since I last posted. This Daking Mic Pre IV came in with a damaged channel after someone had sent phantom voltage down through the 1/4” input. The output transistors were blown on one of the amp cards and had shorted the voltage to ground which took out a PCB fuse.

Now back up and running after some head scratching.

Latest creation, an improved design of the Musitronics PS-1 power supply. This is dual PSU which can be configured to provide different voltages through a resistor network.

This PSU has been created for an original Musitronics Mu-Tron III envelope filter. The PSU enclosure mimics the original PS-1 which you could purchase back in the day. This provides +9/-9V through an old stock connector.

Custom made CTS trimmer adaptors to help fine tuning of the audio signal for the Fender Rhodes suitcase. Means that any 3/8” multiturn trimmer can now be used to replace that unreliable 110.

Part 2:

1974 Musitronics Mu-tron III envelope filter (auto wah) repair. New custom made daughter board to fit an ALPS 4P3T switch to the CTS 212 footprint. Welded all the mod holes, textured and repainted with a close colour match. New Keystone 9V battery holders and wired like the original even modded to keep the original wire support.

From zero to hero. A Fender Rhodes 4 pin suitcase amp transformation. Originally this was a US imported cabinet running off 120V. A previous tech had using a terminal block re-wired the supply from the Amphenol connector down to a step down transformer inside the cabinet then back down to the original US transformer. There were lots of holes in the faceplate and the jacks were tired and worn.

A new faceplate was designed by myself. A new transformer and internal electronics was purchased from VV and the chassis was re-plated. Now it’s better than ever.

Soon for sale, a completely restored Dyno My Piano Pro-Piano preamp for the Fender Rhodes.

Work performed:

Power rail electrolytics replaced (audio path caps to be changed soon)
Out of tolerance resistors changed
Pots completely disassembled, cleaned and polished
New preamp cable with Switchcraft gold plated RCA
New 1/4” Switchcraft jack and wiring
Cleaned up and straightened out the case
New reproduction PSU cheekblock with my own PCB
Replacement DC wall adaptor

Currently the NICAD battery recharge function hasn’t been connected but this can be for no extra charge if you want.

A very special Dyno My Piano chorus card. This is one of two from the famous Robbie Buchanan LA Dyno piano. Similar architecture to the Boss CE-2, these cards are stacked on top of each other separated by nylon spacers and mounted on a Pro-EQ board.

This has had the 4558’s socketed, Panasonic FM caps for the power rails and Nichicon FG for the audio path.

You can hear this exact preamp used on the tracking “Saving all my love for you” by Whitney Houston on her 1985 album.

Next batch of Rhodes Stage passive pre-amplifiers are complete. These pre-amps require no soldering to install and replace your existing stock stage preamp for all eras of stage piano (MK1,MK2,MKV)

The preamp utilises a passive high pass filter allowing the highs to pass and with the use of the tone pot roll off the bass when required. The PCB offers greater structural rigidity compared to the wiring of the original which has a tendency to break at the lugs.

All are hand built by myself with no expense spared.

Roland JC-120 PSU mid servicing. Some of the original Matsush*ta caps were showing signs of leakage on the negative lead and were overdue replacement anyway. Whilst they tested fine, a new set of diodes for the bridge rectifier were added and Nichicon VZ caps for the smoothing were installed. All the resistors measured perfectly in tolerance.

Complete overhaul of the electronics.
installation of a VV PSU with soft start, pre-amp, pre-amp PSU and amp module overhauls.

Re-cap of electrolytic capacitors,
Replaced out of tolerance resistors,
Trace repair on pre-amp PSU,
Re-soldered header pins,
Bias and DC offset calibration.

Something else I’ve been working on for a few pianos. A close copy of the original 4 pin amplifier module for a Rhodes suitcase with a few modern component updates. Also included on the underside of the PCB are the instructions for either Germanium or Silicon usage.
