We joined industry experts at UK Construction Week to explore how getting the early planning journey right can help support better development decisions and improve viability. One thing was clear: viable development starts long before a planning application is submitted.

Three key takeaways stood out:

1. Find the right land early
Identifying a site is only the beginning. Understanding its planning credentials, physical constraints and development potential early can help prevent costly mistakes later – particularly when rising costs and competitive land values are putting pressure on viability.

2. Better data, better decisions
Developers need access to reliable information about constraints, local requirements and planning policy before committing significant time and money to a site. Better, more accessible planning data can reduce uncertainty and support more informed decisions.

3. Get applications right first time
Incomplete applications can create avoidable delays. Understanding local validation requirements, technical information and potential obligations such as Section 106 and CIL before submission can help applications move through the system more efficiently.

What a fantastic few days at Grand Designs Live at NEC Birmingham!

Last week, Planning Portal joined homeowners, planners, self-builders and renovation enthusiasts for a weekend packed with inspiration, ideas and expert advice.

It was great to connect with so many people exploring their next home improvement, self-build or renovation project and to share how Planning Portal can help make the planning journey simpler and more informed.

🎤 On Friday, our Product Specialist Gareth Welch and Principal Town Planner John Van Eker took to the Build and Renovation Theatre to explore how the right tools and insights can help self-builders and renovators better understand the planning process and take their next steps with greater confidence.

🏡 Throughout the weekend, John also joined the Ask the Expert zone, providing 15-minute planning advice sessions and answering questions from visitors about their individual projects.

Almost ¼ of professionals told us our improved document management tools are one of the most useful features.

Here’s what you can now do:

✓ Follow a live checklist to see what documents are needed
✓ Upload, tag or delete multiple documents at once
✓ Get helpful prompts to avoid missing anything
✓ Use special characters &, , - # [ ] in supporting document file names - A common snag point, sorted - we worked with local authority system suppliers so special characters in file names now pass straight through, no renaming needed
