Beautiful sunrise through the trees Achingly beautiful forest with an almost perfect ground cover of thyme, wild mint, hair-cap moss and briar root. Penthouse suite So windy up here. The wind funnels up from the coast gaining speed and soaking up moisture. The nett effect is that it’s cold and humid up here, most unpleasant! Last night the panic started with our hostess showing us weather forecasts for the Bocca d’Asignau of winds between 50-70 km/h. Speculation was rife of the Crete route being closed as too dangerous! Breakfast for one sir? I also received the news that our wonderful Queen had passed away, long live the King. She was without doubt the epitome of duty, service, devotion and loyalty to her country, her family and her heritage....

Midnight visitor Good night’s sleep despite pack horses trampling and munching all round my tent. New friends for the toast, Ida, Farid, Tony and Christophe Last night was fun. Enjoyed the pizzas made by Italian chef Luca, great meal with new faces and met a real life author! Of course I bought the book, GD Harper’s ‘Love’s Long Road’. Head-torch procession Heading out at 05:00 from the comfort of my tent was hard but I knew I needed to break the ascent asap. The procession was amazing, a string of pearls in the dark running up the mountain. Summiting at Bocca a e Porte 2225m It really was a test, 980m in 3k. Couldn’t wait to leave so set off with head torch at 05:30. Made a quick descent into a steep sided valley. Cool rock formations Stopped to buy sheep cheese at the Bergeries de Radoule, superb taste, strong and fresh. The ladies were kind enough to show me the process. Wonderful people at Bergeries au Ballone I was sad to leave Matt and Cathy after enjoy their wonderful hospitality. The trail beckoned and we are off. Incredible views all round with a lengthy route down into the next valley. Mega steep descent again It’s was hot work for the feet, knees, hips and well…everything! So cooling down was a priority....

So today is a challenge, 50% higher and 50% longer than yesterday we climb up to Mount Cinto the highest point on the trip. Hotel de La Chslet - basic but wonderful I managed to wash my stinking clothes and dry them on a towel rail, luxury. Enjoyed a huge night’s sleep after pasta and soup (oh okay and chocolate mousse)....

So today is a challenge, 50% higher and 50% longer than yesterday we climb up to Mount Cinto the highest point on the trip. Hotel de La Chslet – basic but wonderful I managed to wash my stink…
