We’re all about those tiny wins—the little 1% improvements that add up over time to create something brilliant. It’s a bit like compound interest, but for making your life easier.

Recently, we've been working on how to make our platform even smoother to use. Smarter help when and where you need it.

We've built in some intuitive prompts, made our support articles bite-sized and actionable, and you can search for exactly what you need right in the app.

These are all micro changes and there is always more we can do, we'll be monitoring the results and continuing to make incremental improvements.

Three principles underpin our commitment to building sustainable software.

1. Only make what you need (reduce processing)
2, Only move what you need (reduce data in transit)
3. Only keep what you need (reduce data at rest)

As part of our ongoing commitment to reduce the carbon footprint of BrandStencil, we are refactoring the application to be as energy efficient as possible.

Why do people use PDFs? Partly because content creators can have have more control over the layout, design and branding of a PDF. This is of course, hugely important for making on brand content as it maintains brand consistency.

However, PDFs can also be inaccessible, this means that people using assistive technology cannot access the content.

PDFs are the most created file types in our BrandStencil platform, although we can output PNGs, JPEGS, MS docs and even HTML.

People used to think that doing things online was more sustainable. It was easy to choose to use software over paper, for example. No need to declutter those emails, they are virtual so have no carbon footprint.

But unfortunately every online interaction uses comes with it's own environmental impact.

Current estimates are that software contributes between 1%-3% of the world's global electricity usage and this is set to grow and grow, especially with the rise in AI.

At BrandStencil we are looking at ways we can reduce the energy consumption and carbon footprint of our brand management platform so we've embraced sustainable software development with green coding practices and using green hosting and infrastructure.

It's a complex process and we are learning, measuring and revising as we go. Here's three things we've implemented so far. If you have any tips or advice please let us know, we'd love to hear from you.

12 months ago we started our Ecologi woodland as part of our commitment to climate action in 2023 and it's been great to see it slowly grow.

Projects like Ecologi aren't perfect but they are a way to start to do something positive about climate change.

Over 2024 we will be continuing on our sustainability journey. We are hosting our infrastructure on green hosting, implementing sustainable software development techniques as well as working toward net zero by 2030.

During 2024 we will be calculating our emissions and taking action to reduce them. It's a huge learning curve and as a remote first, micro business our impact will be small but we believe that every action matters.
