Something a little different this week. Instead of just showing you what's on the desk, we're handing you a puzzle.
These four icons are from a website we're building right now. No labels. What do you reckon they mean?
Most websites hand you a hard hat for construction, a spanner for repairs, and a little house for property. There's nothing wrong with that. It's clear, it works, and for plenty of businesses it's exactly right.
But there's another way. Build an icon set around a single element, in this case the humble cube, and something interesting happens. Four cubes together stops being four cubes. It becomes a team. A neighbourhood. Foundations. Whatever your brain decides to make of it.
Now, on the actual website these rarely float about on their own. They sit beside a heading and a bit of copy, so the context does half the lifting. The icon just gives your brain a nudge and you do the rest without even noticing.
That's the bit we love. Humans can't help putting meaning onto things. Give people a little room to do that and your website earns an edge that the obvious route never quite gets to.
