πŸ‘‹ Who are Cannington Computers?

The idea behind Cannington Computers is to share my knowledge and skills with our village. I don't believe in charging extortionate rates, and I'll be straight with youβ€”if I can't fix something, I'll be honest about it, and I'll be fair.

A bit about me? I'm Dan, and I moved to the village with my fiancΓ©e in May 2023.

My relationship with computers and technology started when I was 8 years old, building my first computer with my Dad back in the early 2000s. I've pretty much grown up with it since then.

Before this, I worked for a group of special education schools in Bridgwater, Somerset, before leaving that role in September 2023 to support various Cornish Schools as a remote engineer. If anyone knows how to break technology, it's students, so I'm well-versed in troubleshooting and fixing.

My fiancΓ©e often tells me off for constantly tinkering with tech stuff and having too many cables around the house.

I understand how frustrating computers and technology can be, especially if you don't work with them every day or haven't grown up around them. I don't like how some big firms and retailers try to take advantage or sell things that are unnecessary. You won't get that with me.

So, if you need help or advice, please reach out. I can mainly help in the evenings between Tuesday and Fridays, so we can usually find something that suits or work something out.

Mythbusting Monday πŸ’ͺ

Let's make sure we are all secure...

πŸ” A Strong Password Guarantees Security: While strong passwords are essential, they are not the only line of defense. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security and is highly recommended.

Mythbusting Monday πŸ’ͺ

Let's go again... This one is for all Phone and Tablet users.

⚑️Closing Apps Extends Battery Life: Closing apps running in the background might actually have the opposite effect. Modern operating systems are designed to manage apps efficiently, and keeping them open can save battery life as repeatedly opening and closing apps consumes more resources.

Mythbusting Monday again πŸ’ͺ

Let's bust another common computer myth...

πŸ•ΆοΈ Incognito Mode Makes You Anonymous: Incognito mode or private browsing only prevents your browsing history from being stored on your local device. It doesn't make you completely anonymous online as your internet service provider and websites you visit can still track your activity.

However, there are privacy options available such as VPNs (Virtual Private Network) Apps that you can install to give you more privacy.

πŸ’» Macs Don't Get Viruses: While it's true that Macs have historically been less targeted than Windows PCs, they are not immune to viruses and other malware. As Macs become more popular, they have also become more appealing targets for cybercriminals.

If you need help with a virus on your Mac get in touch we are happy to advise.

Free backup advice that could stop you losing precious or sentimental photos. πŸ‘‡

I've helped many people recover photos from old or failing hard drives and memory sticks but one of the best fixes is restoring from a backup. There are paid options but I'm all about saving money where you can!

There are several free ways to back up important photos. Here are a few options:

☁️ Cloud Storage Services: Many cloud storage providers offer free plans with a limited amount of storage space. You can upload your important photos to these services, and they will be stored securely in the cloud. Some popular options include Google Drive, Dropbox, and Microsoft OneDrive.

πŸ“Έ Social Media Platforms: You can utilise social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram to store your important photos. Create a private album or post them privately to ensure only you can access them. However, bear in mind that these platforms may compress or reduce the quality of your photos.

βœ‰οΈ Email: You can email your important photos to yourself as attachments. This method is straightforward and can serve as a quick backup solution. However, email providers typically have storage limitations, so this may not be suitable for a large number of photos.

πŸ’Ύ External Hard Drives: If you have an external hard drive, you can manually copy your important photos onto it. External hard drives offer a reliable and offline backup solution. Remember to keep the hard drive in a safe place to protect it from physical damage or loss.

πŸ’‘ USB Flash Drives: USB flash drives are portable and convenient for backing up a small number of photos. You can copy your important photos onto the flash drive, and it can serve as a secondary storage option.

Remember, regardless of the backup method you choose, it's always a good idea to have multiple backups in different locations to safeguard against data loss.

In the worst case scenario, if you have a hard drive that has failed or have lost photos, Cannington Computers may be able to help with data recovery. 😊πŸ–₯️

Free Backup Advice To Save You Hassle πŸ‘‡

I recently got asked to help fix a PC that wouldn't start as the system files were all messed up. An easy way to fix this typically is to revert to a previous point in time when this error does not exist. However in this case no System Restore Points existed so this was not as easy.πŸ˜ͺ

See below πŸ‘‡ my 4 Step guide on how to create these points manually yourself and why they are important. you can do this periodically and it takes around 2 minutes to do.

Creating a System Restore Point in Windows 10/11 πŸ–₯οΈπŸ’ΎπŸ”:

Step 1: Open the System Properties Window

Press the Windows key + X and select "System" from the menu that appears.
In the System window, click on the "System protection" link on the left-hand side.
Step 2: Create a Restore Point

In the System Properties window, click on the "Create" button.
Enter a descriptive name for the restore point (e.g., "Pre-software installation") and click "Create."
Step 3: Wait for the Restore Point to be Created

Windows will take a moment to create the restore point. This process may take a few minutes, so be patient.
Step 4: Confirm the Creation of the Restore Point

Once the restore point is created, you'll see a confirmation message. Click "Close" to exit the window.
Why Creating System Restore Points is Important βš™οΈπŸ”„πŸ’‘:

Easy Recovery: System restore points serve as a safety net for your computer. If something goes wrong, such as a software installation or a system configuration change causing issues, you can use a restore point to revert your system to a previous stable state.

Time-Saver: Restoring your computer to a previous state through a system restore point is generally faster than other recovery methods. It allows you to undo unwanted changes quickly, saving you time and effort.

Versatility: System restore points are not limited to software-related issues. They can also help with recovering from malware infections, resolving driver conflicts, or fixing configuration problems.

Peace of Mind: By regularly creating system restore points, you can have peace of mind knowing that you have a fallback option in case something goes wrong with your computer.

Remember, it's important to create restore points before making any major changes to your system, such as installing new software, drivers, or making system configuration adjustments. This way, you have a restore point as a safety net, providing an easy way to revert to a stable system state if needed.

πŸ”’πŸ’ΎπŸ’ͺ Take charge of your system's well-being and create system restore points regularly!
