🚨 If your business is still running Windows 10, this is worth five minutes of your time.

Under GDPR Article 32, organisations processing personal data must implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect it.

Running unsupported software puts you at risk of falling short of that obligation, and the UK ICO takes a dim view of it!

Windows 10 reached end of support on 14 October 2025. No more security patches, no feature updates, no technical support as standard 🛑

Microsoft's paid Extended Security Updates (ESU) programme allows organisations to continue receiving critical security patches for up to three years past that date, provided devices are running Windows 10 version 22H2. If you have an active ESU subscription, you are in a far better compliance position than those with no coverage at all.

But ESU is just a temporary fix, not a strategy. It covers security only, costs £58 per device in Year One, and doubles every year after that. Miss Year One and you pay for it anyway when you join.

✅ Windows 11 is the destination. For most businesses, upgrading now works out cheaper than an escalating subscription to keep ageing hardware going, and the process is far less disruptive than people expect.

Here is what that means, and why it might matter to your business too:

Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed certification built around five technical controls: firewalls, secure configuration, user access control, malware protection, and patch management.

It is not glamorous. But it is foundational. And the absence of it is exactly what attackers exploit 🤖 🦠

Think of Cyber Essentials as locking your front door, fitting a smoke alarm, and then not beimg stupid enough to leave a spare key under the mat! Basic? Yes. But most successful cyber attacks target businesses that have not done the basics - and left their key under the mat!

There are two levels. Cyber Essentials is a self-assessment reviewed by an accredited body. Cyber Essentials Plus goes further, with an external technical audit of your actual devices.
