For BML, Cyber Essentials Plus certification wasn't a nice-to-have. It was the price of entry.

"What really drove it was we needed to get onto government frameworks. It was critical for us, so it was a bit of a no-brainer, just get it done."

Ben Johnson, Founder & CEO of the Bath-based M&A and transformation consultancy, needed certification to get onto UK government frameworks including DOS 7 and G-Cloud.

Getting a push notification on your phone every time you log in might feel like an extra step, but it is doing more work than you think.

A password on its own is not enough anymore. Passwords can be guessed, reused, or leaked in breaches that have nothing to do with you.

Multi-factor authentication adds a second check, so a stolen password alone is not enough to allow someone access to your accounts.

What MFA actually gives you:
🔐 A second layer of protection even if a password is compromised
📱 A quick approval on your phone instead of typing in a code every time
💼 Works just as well on a work device, if using a personal phone is a concern
🚫 Stops the vast majority of account takeover attempts before they start

It might feel like a small inconvenience. It is also usually the exact thing that stops a stolen password becoming a full blown breach.

"Why can't I just install this myself?"

It is one of the most common frustrations we hear, and also one of the easiest ways a business ends up dealing with a security incident.

Local admin rights let someone install software and change system settings without restriction. It sounds fine, right up until malware or ransomware gets onto that machine, even by accident, through one bad link. With local admin rights in place, it can spread further, disable security tools, and cause far more damage than it should.

Why we set most users up with standard rights, not admin:

☎️ The UK's analogue phone network, the PSTN, is being switched off by 31 January 2027.

Every business still relying on traditional landlines, whether for calls, alarms, or even card machines, will need to move to a digital alternative before then.
