Hi everyone,

This is just a quick message to let you know that Borough Green Computer Care is closed until further notice - this is likely to be at least a week.

At about 02:00 on Tuesday morning, I had to be rushed to hospital and undergo an emergency surgery. I'm still recovering from that surgery, and am unable to move for more than a few minutes at a time before needing to lie down again. This means I'm unable to repair computers at the moment.

For any non-urgent enquiries, our email inbox and phone line are still open - just be aware that you won't be able to book an appointment for a while.

Thank you for your understanding.
- Oliver

We're aware of a scam that is currently circulating, hoping to prey on vulnerable people during the current pandemic.

If you receive a text message claiming that you have been in contact with somebody who is infected with COVID-19, and gives you a link to click on, you should not click the link. It is very likely to be a scam, and the people behind it are likely to try to get personal information from you through the linked website.

At the current time, the government is not using SMS messages to send out information about infected individuals that you have come into contact with - therefore, any you do receive are likely to be illegitimate.

If a link claims to be from the government, you should only trust it if it takes you to gov.uk or nhs.uk. The government will not send out links to other websites.

For official information about COVID-19, your best source of information is the NHS: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/

Attached to this post is an example of such a text message. We have censored the URL to discourage people from visiting the website. Apologies for the poor quality of the image - the image was forwarded to us by somebody else, so we were not able to obtain a clearer picture.

This is a quick warning to let you know that, if you own a computer running Windows 10, you need to update it as soon as possible. A critical security flaw has just been discovered that may allow malicious actors to remotely run malware and viruses on your computer at any time, and prevent you from being able to patch it.

The exploit may also render SSL, which is the encryption that protects HTTPS connections, useless, potentially exposing private information like your banking details to malicious attackers.

Microsoft has already published a security update that fixes the issue, but you need to update your computer in order to receive the update. To do this, go to Settings, then Update & Security, then Windows Update, and install all available updates that you find there.

As long as you update your computer, you will be safe from this exploit - but you need to do so soon, as the exploit may be able to prevent you from receiving the security update in the future if your PC becomes affected.

If you need assistance with installing the update, we are temporarily offering to remotely control your PC and install the update for you free of charge for the next week or two. Please contact us if you need this assistance. However, if you are able to do it yourself, please do, as we will likely be under higher-than-usual demand due to offering this.

The NSA has released a report:https://media.defense.gov/2020/Jan/14/2002234275/-1/-1/0/CSA-WINDOWS-10-CRYPT-LIB-20190114.PDF

Microsoft has released a security advisory: https://portal.msrc.microsoft.com/en-US/security-guidance/advisory/CVE-2020-0601

And the exploit is listed in the National Vulnerability Database: https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2020-0601
