After a long time out of the workshop, two good fixes today. First two pairs of stunning Beolab 8000 speakers belonging to a customer. They were sounding a bit ropey and one pair had a nasty earth fault on the input. They are fantastically well engineered and took some disassembly. The good news is that both pairs have the newer white sound deadening material so are very clean inside. Both pairs restored to full working order. Cost to the customer? £30.

Second my in laws’ broken Samsung TV. New backlights fitted and back to full working order. This is a nice 32” 1080p non samart TV. With new backlights the picture is nice and bright. Cost of parts £10.

Now getting ready for the first meeting of the North East Amiga Group tomorrow at St Nicholas Church Hall in West Boldon from 12.00.

It’s been a wee bit quiet over here for a while. Sorry about that, we’ve had some family stuff going on. Hopefully that’s all calming down a bit now.

Thought I’d share the completion of my latest personal project, the Amiga 1200 Tower. Boasting a 68030 processor, 32Mb of RAM plus PCI bus with graphics, sound and network cards it’s the system I would have killed for in the early 90s but never could have afforded 🤣

Emma and I just got back from the Cambridge and visits to The Centre for Computing History and Bletchley Park. Both fascinating places and highly recommended. Thoroughly enjoyed the trip, though it was a bit jarring to find stuff I worked on in my previous profession as exhibits in a museum! 🤣

Just a reminder that we’re still here and accepting repairs. Get it touch if you think we can help!

A bit of post holiday pottering this afternoon. A1200 / Blizzard 1230 IV desktop transferred to the Elbox BlackBox tower case I picked up locally a little while ago.

Installed Mediator 1200TX PCI board plus Radeon 9200SE graphics card and fast Ethernet PCI card. First time setting up RTG graphics, but all sorted in the end.

A bit more config to go. Waiting on FastATA interface to arrive so I can get the CDRom installed. But I’m pretty happy so far! Time for some Turrican II AGA!

Another drifting DualSense! This time we’re replacing with hall effect sticks. These work without friction parts and so should last a lot, lot longer than the originals.

New sticks in, controller recalibrated and bang the drift is gone! Cost including parts £20. If you’ve got a drifting controller drop me a line. Warning - after repair your lack of accuracy can no longer be blamed on the controller! 🤣

Another nice little Amiga related side quest. I spotted a couple of 3Com PCMCIA 3c589 etherlink network cards on eBay for cheap because they were missing the dongles that connect the network cables. The dongles are like hen’s teeth and ccomplete cards go for upward of £40 each. I got two for less than £12 delivered.

An hour or so on the bench and I had the pairs mapped out. Another half hour and I have a working PCMCIA network card in my A1200 for approximately £6 plus half an old network cable. Result!

Quick side quest - modifying a standard PC floppy drive to work with a Commodore Amiga. This drive is black and it’s destined for my Amiga 1200 tower project.

I’ll be posting more of the build process as I put the tower together. I’m aiming to build my ‘dream’ A1200 with a 060 processor, PCI bus board and RTG graphics. Currently have most of the parts on hand for the basic build, including a snazzy black tower case with some custom backplates for the miggy board.

PS5 DualSense Controller Stick Drift Fix

It’s been a bit quiet of late as I’ve been very busy with my real job! A friend brought a DualSense with noticable stick drift in and I finally got some bench time in. On inspection the thumb sticks were very worn internally with the friction material braking down. This is the usual cause of drift. I cleaned out the pots and the drift got a lot better, but it was going to come back.

Worn thumb sticks replaced with new like for like units and bang the drift is gone!

This is a much cheaper fix than a new controller. Usually with like for like parts it’ll cost about £15 for both sticks. I can also supply and fit upgraded hall effect sticks which should never drift again, for £25. Drop me a line if your stick is drifting! 🤣

Another one saved! Nice Toshiba 60inch TV. Came in refusing to power on and constantly rebooting. Diagnosed a faulty mainboard (most likely bad flashram). New board sourced and fitted. Total cost to the owner £60.
