Do you know about Microsoft Patch Tuesday? If not read on........
All versions Microsoft Windows O/S update themselves continuously.
On the 2nd Tuesday of each month (Wednesday in the UK/Europe) Microsoft roles out a monthly set of updates.
With windows versions prior to 8.1 you had good control of what updates occurred and when. In most cases I'd always recommend allowing these updates as they fix new flaws and vulnerabilities in the O/S. (NB: Not a substitute for good internet security!)
With Windows 10 you also get major 'Feature updates' about every 6 months. You have little control as to when these occur. For example the latest Feature update known as the Creators Update (1703 build) was released in April 2017 and has been slowly being rolled out around the world. Don't worry if you not received it yet, you will in time.
These feature updates can take a very long time to download and install. They can make your PC/Laptop feel slow while this is happening.
Most updates will download in background and when it can and will prompt that a restart will be needed.
Assuming normal monthly updates and feature updates install OK, don't be surprised if further updates occur. A number of check - download - update's sessions can occur before you PC/Laptop is completely up to date.
Indeed this month Aug-2017 there does seem to be a major update to the 1703 build.
Your PC/Laptop screen may go blank for a long time. Don't be tempted to turn it off! If (and this is just my estimate) it has not completed in 24 hours please give me a call for advice.

Patch Tuesday (a.k.a. Update Tuesday[1]) is an unofficial term used to refer to when Microsoft regularly releases security patches for its software products. It is widely referred to in this way by the industry.[2][3][4] Microsoft formalized Patch Tuesday in October 2003.[5]
