And on that note, that’s the end of the Snakes & Ladders battle. Fair play to anyone who sat through all 60-odd videos of it!
Needless to say, it was a mighty battle, but in the end the machine came out on top. It’s definitely a player’s machine, and it’s been interesting from a science point of view to see what happens when a completely clueless player with zero skills tries to force it out. There’s no doubt there’s still plenty of value left in the machine, but after a few hours I needed to move on, and it became obvious that with my level of knowledge I was never going to beat it.
This really comes down to my luck and lack of skill. I get exactly the same results wherever I play JPMs and play them how I do. The reality is that, to create content for this page and help preserve a small piece of fruit machine history, I sometimes have to play machines that I have absolutely no idea how to play. That often means learning the hard way and putting money into games that experienced players would probably handle very differently.
A good example would be Red Rose Bowl. I managed to make £70 last a few hours playing 80s machines that are £2/3 jackpots that I’m completely clueless on, whereas an experienced player could probably make a fiver last all day on the same machines. That’s the difference knowledge and experience can make.
It’s nothing to do with the arcade being bad. The arcade where this machine is based has one of the highest payout percentages around, and there’s no doubt that a knowledgeable player would get far more out of it than I ever could. Sometimes the machine wins, and this time it definitely did!
Thanks for following the battle, and hopefully it’s been an interesting look at what happens when enthusiasm and nostalgia outweigh skill!
