Over the summer, while things might be a little quieter at work (fingers crossed! 🀞), I’m going to share some simple tips to help us think about inclusivity in the workplace β€” whether for our colleagues, customers, or both.

Tip #3: Share any new info or agenda's before meetings

It can be daunting and overwhelming to try and process new information whilst listening, lipreading, watching sign language interpreters or reading captions.

By sharing agenda's or sharing any new information that will be discussed in meetings beforehand gives the deaf person time to process it prior to meetings.

This small action helps ensure they can focus on the information you are sharing at the meeting without feeling overwhelmed

Why does it matter? Around 1 in 5 people experience some form of hearing loss, and small adjustments like this can make a significant difference to their experience in the workplace

A small change. A big impact. πŸ’‘

If you'd like me to deliver a deaf inclusion session at your workplace or deliver a bespoke BSL course, I'd love to hear from you 😊

Over the summer, while things might be a little quieter at work (fingers crossed! 🀞), I’m going to share some simple tips to help us think about inclusivity in the workplace β€” whether for our colleagues, customers, or both.

Tip #2: Get a deaf person's attention before you speak

It can be really frustrating to finally work out who is speaking in a meeting (whether in person or online) or in a group conversation, only to realise they've already started talking and you've missed the beginning of what they said.

At that point, we either have to be confident enough to interrupt and ask them to repeat themselves, or try to piece together what we've missed.

A simple but effective tip is to gently raise your hand to face height and wait until the person with hearing loss looks at you before you start speaking.

This small action helps ensure they can focus on you from the start and makes communication much easier.

Over the summer, while things might be a little quieter at work (fingers crossed! 🀞), I’m going to share some simple tips to help us think about inclusivity in our workplace β€” whether for our colleagues, customers, or both.

Tip #1: Caption ALL videos

Training videos, company updates, information sharing, team messages β€” if it’s a video, add captions.

Why? Because around 1 in 5 people experience some form of hearing loss, meaning captions can make a huge difference to far more people than you might expect.

And it’s not just helpful for people with hearing loss. Captions also support people watching in noisy environments, those who are non-native speakers, and anyone who finds it easier to absorb information by reading as well as listening.

A small change. A big impact. πŸ’‘
