Rare Disease Reads: Family Edition!

This week’s book recommendation: I Can Do Hard Things: Mindful Affirmations for Kids (link to purchase: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08731CCMY?linkCode=ssc&tag=onamzchayab09-20&creativeASIN=B08731CCMY&asc_item-id=amzn1.ideas.2VV3BOUUT1XAQ&ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d_asin)

Written by Gabi Garcia (Gabi Garcia Books) & illustrated by Charity Russell (Charity Russell Illustration)

This book offers positive affirmations paired with widely representative and uplifting illustrations. It is important to reflect on what we say to ourselves. With guidance from this book, we learn to control and empower that inner dialogue.

If your family is navigating a rare disease, you may feel unsure how to talk to your children about difficult topics that exist within the world of illness and disability. For this reason, children’s books are a wonderful way to safely initiate these conversations, demystify adaptive equipment, and embrace wellness practices.

Even though these books are written for a toddler and elementary school audience, they can be enjoyed by all ages.

A really unique story by Ethan Levy and his dork dancing- it's a thing! https://www.dorkdancing.com/
It was a really fun project to work on and I really liked the message behind it; let go of your inhibitions and dance!

There are so many places I'd love to visit in the world, but I'm terrified of flying ✈️ I have really fought it at times and have overcome and visited some amazing beautiful places, with wonderful cultures and fantastic people. One of the places I would really like to visit is Singapore, because of this author. I've worked on several books for her, and she's a great ambassador for her home. I've really been inspired from this recently completed personal project ❤️🇸🇬

I'm quite choosy about the projects I take on. They have to resonate with me. I have to want to work on them—otherwise, I know I won’t enjoy it, and I think that really shows in the final illustrations.

A couple of months ago, I was asked to design and illustrate a book about stablecoins. I didn’t know anything about them. My first thought was, "Aaaagh, Bitcoin—The Missing Crypto Queen!" (It’s a BBC Sounds documentary). But this was for a baby board book. The idea was just too cute, it talks about the blockchain!

So, I did a little bit of research (didn't really understand much), but I took it on. And I’m glad I did! I was lucky to work with a lovely writer, and I can’t wait to see it in print!

Hee hee! I really enjoyed creating this funny, dark illustration. I was especially enamoured with the horror poster that says “That Smarts!” in a splat of blood. 🤣 🔪🩸

🎄Working on a really cool unique project right now — an Australian Christmas project! ☀️Santa swapping his sleigh for a surfboard 🏄‍♂️🎅
I spent a few years growing up in Australia, and every time I collaborate with Aussie clients, it takes me back. Redback's in the letter box, the heat, and days at the beach.

I've had a bit of a strange year and a half, but today, I got up had my cup of tea and read a chapter of my book with my dog Frank, basking in the sun. And I was really looking forward to working today. I'm currently working on a project for Dork Dancing, here's a few of the characters 🦆🦊 I'm back indoors now at my drawing board and ready for the day!

Presently enjoying a bit of character design, it's gorgeous weather at the moment so I've started sketching outside in the mornings, when it gets too sunny I start to get white page blindness 😁, so I come in to work on the desktop. I'm quite happy with these guys, it's always quite hard to really show the character in character design, it's not really till they are in situ in the illustrations that they really come into themselves 🐕 woof woof!

At this time of year I work on quite a few personal projects, stories from generations of families, finally put to private print. This is a really beautiful one I've just recently completed, I've learnt so much about the salt marshes in the US, about the amazing abundance of wildlife that lives there.
I thought I'd share just a few pages from it ❤️🐿🦢🐸🦅

I know it's still a while away but if anyone is like me and already started their Christmas shopping, I thought I'd plug my activity book. I designed this for my daughter's birthday- she's an adult but I think the book is open to anyone over 10 years old.
It's a book with creative hints. If that sounds like something a loved one might like as a gift (or yourself), here's a link of where to purchase it 📕

"This book is a place for you to be creative, inventive and let loose.
Each page has little ideas for you to think creatively. To design, sketch, stick, or do whatever you fancy (within reason) to create an unusual, fun, exciting and personal book of your creation. Remember a picture speaks a thousand words, if you don't want to write anything, draw it.
No matter your artistic skills, this is somewhere to think freely and let the imagination spill out, it's time to 'spill the tea' on your creativity.
Have fun! Scissors required."

And if you do I'd love to receive images of what's been created!
