Got a S-Drive no flash codes, no bleeps, it should drive but it doesn't …

leave the keylock turned on, disconnect one battery lead , reconnect, flash code , error , , you forced the controller to go straight into diagnostic mode but if nothing still insisting no errors , you got a nearly dead controller seriously ill! fixable, maybe... for the sake of £5 let me find out ...

don't forget 9 flashes could be the brake not always internal controller fault...

so how does this work ? well the CPU , the brains , the processor , has a reset circuit, the processor has to be reset to start, now the keylock supplies power to the reset circuit allowing the controller to start and it does this by executing code internally , this is where it carries out a internal diagnostic check then checks the resistance of the brake motor etc by communication with components that are used to control the motor, brake etc before it attempts to take notice of the wigwag etc..

If you thinking of buying leisure batteries for your mobility scooter , you will be disappointed. They simply don't give the long lasting performance required.

Why okay lets think about the controller cut off point ,, the point where the voltage regulators inside the controller cannot function because the input voltage is too low .

Most controllers have a 15V and 5V requirement and they have a minimum voltage input requirement.

so once those regulators cannot give a output voltage of the level required , most components will fail, stop working ..and a abrupt stop ..

AGM , GEL , lithium will hold that voltage requirement for the longest time possible then a sudden drop .. Leisure batteries and car batteries will quickly drop off the required voltage level...

Regen, " regenerative power " that's when the motor becomes generator for example going down a gradient of some distance..

Now for some lithium batteries this can pose a problem... why ? okay your lithium battery BMS might have maximum output of 60Amps.

100Amps is common for 8mph scooters ... Now the regen current can be quite high and all modern controllers deal with this but for a BMS, it will see this as a charge current and the maximum charge current rating for the BMS in question could be exceeded ... again if you require further info let me know ,,,

Greenpower and compatible scooters, a puncture can prove very frustrating to get fixed , no one to wants repair a tubeless wheel that size..

My answer is to buy a 10" innertube and remove one side of the tyre and fit the innertube but first check the tyre first making sure nothing nasty sticking in the tyre.., carefully refit the tyre and I can promise you it works... if you need help please let me know .. its not as hard as it looks.. I can do a video to demonstrate the procedure …

My Loan scooter was giving 6 flashes, a inhibit fault , anyway sadly to discover a cosmos brand 5K wigwag pot has become high resistance, very disappointed as it was installed in july, inhibit nonsense was misleading , programmer was also misled so , S Drive was stripped , resoldered and now showing correct fault code... Be warned ...

Lithium Batteries , are they damaging controllers with their higher fully charged voltage ? ( not all models actually charge higher than 28 volts, GEL/AGM are top rated at 28 volts. )

In a Nutshell no, however let's take a example situration ,

A sample lithium battery fully charges at DC 29.4 volts, now there's is a potential for the higher voltage to damage a controller however that depends on the controller in question...

Please note : This is based on my experience and expermention...

Capacitors inside the controller are rated DC 35v absolute max voltage rating ...

If there is a voltage spike high enough then they going to be weakened or at worse will pop their heads ( go bang) ..

I cant mention brands here so please don't ask...

So how do you check and safeguard your mobility scooter ? firstly check the manufacturer of the brand, model .. if its an older model check the battery supplier, what's the fully charge voltage ? is this information on your charger ?.

I have seen some fully charge as high dc 31.5 volts. Just be aware of this ...

More S-Drive madness, some older models , black cases , green circuit board will do 9 flashes for a brake fault... not 5 flashes as per standard ..
