In front of AI, another technology is becoming mainstream now, it will even power certain AI features, however we don’t see the same hype surrounding it.
Say hello to "the edge" a frontier poised to reshape our work landscape and redefine business dynamics, all ahead of AI.
The edge, is shaping our jobs & businesses ahead of AI, yet there is much less talk about edge computing.
Amidst the cacophony of hype and AI-induced handwriting about AI itself, another technology has been stealthily flying under the radar while commanding massive investments.
Edge computing permeates sensors, planes, trains & auto-mobiles, trackers, production machinery, household appliances, wearables, and even your home think IoT.
Within this realm, devices, products, & services emerge, each a testament to the edge's influence. Our working week here bears witness to this, with most of the devices and products we use here to provide our services now touched by or integrated and optimised with "the edge".
The edge combined with the Internet of Things (IoT) form a symbiotic partnership, driving substantial economic activity.
According to a survey by the Eclipse Foundation:
(see https://outreach.eclipse.foundation/iot-edge-commercial-adoption-2022)
1/5th of all respondents allocated between $100K and $1M for the edge and IoT initiatives in 2022.
Anticipation runs high, with approximately 1/3rd planning competing investments in 2023.
A daring few—10%—brace for expenditures exceeding $10M. Meanwhile, just over half of enterprises have already embraced IoT solutions, while an additional 1/4 intend to within the next 12 to 24 months.

If you've got this far and don't understand what edge, the edge, or edge computing are, well here are some resources to help you do that:
One of our favourite and most respected tech companies; Intel has a very detailed explanation of Edge Computing for you here:

The Eclipse foundation has some great resources if you're already in the know and looking to delve into "EdgeOps":
