As it was a pleasant evening, I thought I'd activate Kirkby Moor SOTA on the shortest night of the year and watch the sunset from up there.
It turned out to be a cracking evening.
Using the ICOM IC-705 on 2m, running 10w to the RH-770 aerial at an angle of approximately 45 degrees, so I could work both FM and DX modes.
I initially worked Chris M0KPW on FM, then I worked Andy in Arnside on CW, followed by Dumfries,Bury and Halifax on SSB, not bad at all.
Maxine and myself started our descent at 10pm with still plenty of light left in the sky.

Furness Amateur Radio Society members scaled the heights of Gummer's How, overlooking Lake Windermere to operate from the Trig point. It was Rob Hannan's G4RQJ SK first SOTA summit (G/LD-050). Rob a staunch member of FARS was also a SOTA enthusiast. Members together with Rob's widow Audrey and son Jim, elected to "activate" the summit in his memory. Other members of the club simultaneously operated from Birkrigg and other points in the Furness peninsula. Operating on HF,2m, 4m, 6m and 23cm. On the latter Nick Gregory G0HIK reports 10 QSO's on 23 cm including 2 summit to summit QSO's. Additionally Martyn M0TEB and George M0SSD had their first forays with 23cm. Meanwhile Mark M5TEA on HF had the furthest QSO with an operator in Brazil.
In the words of Chairman Chris M0KPW "It was great to hear so many club members on the air, on numerous bands and modes, all in memory of Rob RQJ - I think you'll agree, we did him proud!"
