Just had this laptop in for diagnosis and tune up after the customer was increasingly unhappy with software errors and the very slow speed of the machine. 😩

The RAM has now been upgraded from 4GB to 16GB and the system fully optimised by bringing all the software up to date and the removal of bloatware, old registry entries and resource hungry background applications.

Laptop now given a new lease of life to cope with the RAM demands of modern software and running very quick and smooth, saving this customer shelling out £500 on a new laptop. 🙂

Hard Drives HDD’s SSD’s Do you know the difference?

Hard drives store data on your machine which includes the operating system, installed software and all your personal files.

Physical Hard Drives (HDD) are a mechanical drive with data stored on magnetic platters.
Due to the limitations of the mechanism a typical 7200rpm spin drive will produce read/write speeds in the region of 150-250 megabytes per second.

In more recent times Solid State Drives (SSD) have become increasingly popular.
They have no moving parts as the data is stored on integrated circuits which makes them silent in operation. Physically the drives are a lot smaller than HDD’s and this has been contributed in particular to laptops and tablets becoming slimmer over time compared to old machines.
Arguably the most beneficial advantage of a SSD is the data can be accessed much faster than a mechanical drive with speeds in some high end SSD’s now reaching north of 7000Mb/s which makes a significant difference to the speed of using your computer. Windows loads faster, programs open quicker and the whole user experience is sharper. Replacing an old HDD with an SSD can give your machine a huge boost.

If you demand high performance from your computer such as for gaming or intense applications then a high performance SSD is a must. (Minimum SSD speed in a Sony PS5 is 5500MB/s for example) Most manufacturers build SSDs with upto 4TB giving you ample storage if needed.

If you would like to enquire about giving your older machine a second wind, or increased storage then drop me an enquiry and I will be happy to advise you.

Can you remember your first computer?

Mine was a second-hand relic, much like the one in this picture, that my dad picked up from the free ads in the late '90s when I was still in school. It rarely worked as expected, so I spent more time fixing it than actually using it. That frustration sparked my curiosity about how computers really work. I learned to take the computer apart and upgrade hardware on a budget and installed repaired software and drivers using old-school DOS prompts, gaining a deep understanding of the system beneath the user-friendly interface we all interact with today that is Windows.

Fast forward, and I became everyone's go-to "computer techie," building new PCs and reviving dead ones. That experience led to an 8-year stint at PC World. Over the last 20 years I built a client base back in Rotherham where I used to live, many of whom I still support today even though I moved to Barlborough. Every problem teaches me something new - there's always more to learn, and I do love a challenge! 😊

If your computer is acting up, send me a message, and let's get it running smoothly again!
