Cyclops’ mission is to make journeys safer for everyone by making drivers aware of the risks of excessive speed, helping them to slow down and reduce accidents. However, speeding isn’t the only cause of accidents.

🚗 Driving requires your full attention and any kind of distraction can lead to disaster. One of the most common and dangerous distractions when driving is our tendency to start daydreaming 🤔💭:

Daydreaming behind the wheel and losing concentration, even for a split second can cause an accident. Prioritise keeping your mind on the road and staying in the present—save daydreaming for another time.

Remember Cyclops is here to help you to maintain focus and awareness on every road so let’s all commit to being responsible drivers in every way. 💙

❄️ Winter is around the corner and accidents are far more common when driving conditions are challenging. Our mission is to make journeys safer for everyone so here are 5 tips to help you stay safe on Winter roads.

1️⃣ Always give yourself extra time for each journey, especially if the roads are snowy or icy so you can drive slowly and safely.
2️⃣ Keep your distance- your stopping distance on snow and ice increases significantly so keep plenty of space between you and the car in front.
3️⃣ Check your tyres- your grip will be seriously reduced in the winter, so ensuring your tyres are in good condition is essential. Whilst law requires you to have your tread depth at a minimum of 1.6mm, grip starts to reduce on anything under 3mm, so make sure you keep an eye on your tyres and replace them if needed.
4️⃣ Have an emergency Winter kit in your car including an Ice scraper and de-icer, a map, blankets and warm clothes, and food that won’t go out of date.
5️⃣ Be sure you know what to do if your car skids. Steer in the direction of the skid. If the back of the car is moving out to the right, you need to steer your car by turning the wheel to the right. It is important not to press hard on your brake or accelerator or turn your steering wheel back and forth.

One more thing: Remember that even though there is a designated speed limit, you can still choose to drive at a slower speed if that is the safe thing to do!

We go to extreme lengths to keep drivers safe by guaranteeing the accuracy of our speed camera data. Our team of trained field surveyors travel the globe to locate, verify and report on the exact location of speed cameras in all corners of the world. Our surveyors are supported by our in-house researchers, who meticulously validate and modify our database in real time.

A couple of months ago our surveyors were in Dubai and on this occasion covered around 2,600 miles of roads through the cities and the tarmac of the desert which at times was quite breathtaking.

Next up we will be surveying the main road networks of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait. Wherever you travel, we've got you covered.

As part of his role, Przemek, our , oversees the field researchers that we send across the world to locate and verify speed cameras. So he felt that he should walk/drive in their shoes to understand the job in more detail, so he took himself on a 🚗

He started in France, on a mission to locate speed cameras.

📸 First stop: Evreux and Versailles, where he took images of speed limit signs and the cameras right next to them, as you can see in these photos.

But it wasn't all work and no play, Przemek managed to squeeze in a visit to the stunning Versailles Palace and Gardens which was en route.

From France, it was off to Belgium, where he saw an example of a red light camera and next up was Germany, where he saw multiple motorway cameras. The trip ended in Poland, where he met Copernicus in the city of Grudziadz.

Przemek located numerous types of cameras on his trip across Europe and got a real flavour of what our surveyors do across 65 territories and 5 continents to guarantee the most accurate data for our clients.

The latest stats for vehicle in Great Britain for 2022 are in, and there's some interesting data to share 📈
Under free-flowing traffic conditions:
🚗 On 30mph roads, 50% of car exceeded the .
🛣️ On motorways, 45% of car drivers went over the limit.
🛤️ On national speed limit single carriageway roads, 11% exceeded the limit.

These stats show that there is still work to do to reduce the number of speeding drivers, but there are some positives. Compliance in 2022 was slightly better than 2021, where the pandemic's impact played a role in reduced traffic levels🚦🦠

Recent News! 🗞

Local communities may soon have a significant say in determining where speed cameras are located.

We all recognise the need to address dangerous roads and accident black spots promptly. In 2021 alone, 7,439 people were injured, with 253 losing their lives due to speeding-related incidents.

MP Mark Eastwood's proposed legislation aims to revolutionise the way speed cameras are positioned across the UK. His vision is to ensure that it's no longer necessary for multiple lives to be lost or individuals to sustain severe injuries before authorities intervene.

Under this plan, communities would have the opportunity to actively contribute to identifying areas where speed cameras can make a significant difference.

The proposed law would compel the government to reevaluate their guidance on camera locations, making it simpler for individuals and communities to petition for speed cameras in their areas.

New in Devon 🚨 have made a significant impact in a very short space of time.
In the first few days alone, over 3,000 speeding drivers were caught! 😱

Replacing the older Gatso cameras, these new ones are strategically placed on routes with a history of collisions and issues, and capture speeding drivers from both directions simultaneously!

For example:
📌 Devon: The digital cameras have replaced older Gatso models on certain roads in Totnes.

📌 Cornwall: Two sets of bi-directional cameras have been installed on the A390.

Now, here are some jaw-dropping statistics from the recent camera activations:

📊 The A376 Exeter Road cameras have been activated 1,671 times since June 14

📊 On Ashburton Road, the cameras have been activated 865 times since June 16

📊 The cameras at St. Ann's Chapel have seen 599 activations since June 14

Leisk, Devon & Cornwall Police's head of road safety and chair of the Vision Zero South West enforcement committee, expressed his shock at these results.

We've got some fascinating news coming straight from Austria that's been generating quite a buzz.. 🐝

The country is releasing a new law to tackle reckless driving: seizing and selling the cars of those who break the speed limit!

We know opinions are divided on this matter. The automobile club believes that this policy is a "massive intrusion" into property rights, while the transport minister stands firm, stating that "extreme speeding" is no mere accident. Nevertheless, Austria is determined to get tough on drivers who simply "refuse to learn."

Starting from March next year, here's what you need to know about this new initiative:

🚦 Urban Areas or Settlements: If caught breaking the speed limit by a staggering 60km/h inside an urban area or settlement, your car will be taken away.

🛣️ Country Roads or Motorways: The same consequences apply to those exceeding the speed limit by 70km/h on country roads or motorways.

Authorities will then have a two-week window to decide whether to return the car to its owner or proceed with selling it at auction. The final decision will depend on the driver's previous record and the gravity of the speeding offense.

What happens to the funds generated from these auctions, you ask?

Well, a significant portion will be invested in road security, enhancing measures to ensure safer journeys for everyone. The remaining funds will be allocated to the local community where the offence occurred, benefiting the neighbourhoods affected.

It's worth acknowledging that Austria, like many EU countries, has made significant progress in reducing road deaths over the years. Measures like this serve as a testament to their commitment to maintaining road safety.
