I help small businesses and home users keep their systems secure, updated and properly configured.

During March I’m offering 8 free 15-minute IT Risk Snapshot calls.

No sales pitch. No remote access. Just a structured review to highlight obvious gaps most people don’t realise they have.

This is useful if:

• You run a small business and IT “mostly works” but hasn’t been reviewed properly
• You rely heavily on email and cloud accounts
• You’ve never checked what’s exposed to the internet
• You’re unsure whether your backups would actually restore

At the end, I’ll give you clear, practical recommendations. If you want help implementing them, we can talk about that. If not, you still leave with clarity.

If you’d like one of the March slots, comment below or message my page.

BitLocker Can Lock You Out - And It’s Happening More Than You Think

We’re seeing an increase in cases where home users and small business owners are being caught off guard by BitLocker encryption.

Often these are newer computers (Windows 10 or 11) that shipped with BitLocker enabled by default - without users ever realising it.

Then something simple happens:

A BIOS update

A crash

A system reset

Suddenly the PC boots into a BitLocker recovery screen…
And the user has no recovery key.

In enterprise environments, this usually isn’t an issue - recovery keys are stored via Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID, or InTune. But for unmanaged devices, this can mean permanent data loss.

Here’s how to protect yourself or your team:

Step 1: Check if BitLocker is turned on

Press Windows + R, type control, press Enter

Go to System and Security > BitLocker Drive Encryption

Look for “BitLocker On” (means you're encrypted)

Step 2: Find and back up your recovery key

Go to: https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey

Don’t see it there?
Check:

USB drives

Password managers

Printed copies

.TXT files saved in Documents or Desktop

Once found, store it securely (preferably in a password manager or printed and kept safely).

What if you can’t find your recovery key?

If you're able to log into Windows, and BitLocker is on, but you have no key backed up, here’s a last-resort option:

Turn BitLocker Off (if no key is available)

Warning: Only do this if you can still access your system and have no recovery key saved.

Open the Start menu, type Manage BitLocker, and press Enter

Click Turn Off BitLocker

Let the decryption process complete — this may take some time

Then: Re-enable BitLocker with a saved recovery key

Return to the Manage BitLocker panel

Click Turn On BitLocker

Follow the steps and make sure you choose where to save your recovery key - save it to your Microsoft account or print/save it securely

This ensures your data stays protected - and recoverable.

Real-world example:

A client came to us after a BIOS update rendered their laptop unbootable. BitLocker was enabled. The recovery key was never backed up - and their data was lost.

This is avoidable - but only if you check now, while everything still works.

If you’re managing your own PCs or supporting a small team without central IT tools, take five minutes to check BitLocker today. You’ll thank yourself later.

Check Your Email Rules - A Silent Cyber Threat Is on the Rise

Stealthy Hackers Are Using Email Rules - Here's How to Check Yours

We’ve seen a rise in cases where hackers quietly create hidden rules in your email - automatically forwarding messages to an attacker without you knowing. These rules are often used to harvest sensitive information or access other accounts linked to your email.

🔐 Whether you're using Gmail, Outlook, or iCloud - it's a good time to check your settings. Here's how:

📧 Gmail:

Open Gmail in a browser

Click the ⚙️ gear icon > "See all settings"

Go to "Filters and Blocked Addresses"

Look for any rules you didn’t create

Check "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" for unexpected addresses

🛑 Remove anything suspicious immediately.

📧 Outlook (Web):

Visit https://outlook.office.com

Click the ⚙️ gear > “Mail” > “Rules”

Review all rules under Inbox rules

Also check Forwarding under Accounts > Forwarding

🛑 If you see rules you didn’t set up, delete them and reset your password.

📧 iCloud Mail:

Go to https://www.icloud.com/mail

Click the ⚙️ bottom-left > "Preferences"

Go to the Rules tab

Review and remove anything unfamiliar

🛑 iCloud rarely has auto-forward rules, so anything here is worth investigating.

🚨 Why you should:

These silent rules can allow attackers to:

Steal security codes or reset links

Read private messages

Access other systems tied to your inbox

💬 Not sure what you're looking at?
We can check your setup and secure your mail properly.

When people don’t take professional advice, it can cost more than just time.

A former client reached out while setting up a new business. I offered to guide their IT hardware choices from the start—Dell laptops, docking stations, dual monitors, Windows 11 Pro for BitLocker and Remote Desktop. A scalable, secure setup.

But a tech-savvy friend stepped in and convinced them to buy from a consumer tech store—the kind that also sells TVs and washing machines.

Later, they called me in to "tie up loose ends." The issue? Only one monitor worked. The USB-C port didn’t support video output. The store had bundled an incompatible cable and promised full dual-monitor support.

I explained what had happened, configured what I could, and helped them get the best out of their now-limited setup. I always try to help, even when I wasn’t listened to the first time.

Moral of the story? Right advice at the right time makes all the difference.

Gaming PC shutting down randomly? Sometimes the fix is simpler than you think.

An elderly gentleman once brought me his gaming PC from another town after the local computer shop couldn’t find the issue. The PC was shutting down unexpectedly, repeatedly, after short periods of uptime - a classic sign of thermal trouble.

Sure enough, a quick diagnostic revealed the issue: His liquid cooler pump had failed. Surprisingly, the CPU fan monitoring was never enabled in the BIOS -so there was no warning when the cooling stopped working.

We replaced the liquid cooler and enabled proper fan and pump monitoring. The PC was stress-tested thoroughly and returned fully operational, giving peace of mind that his grandchildren could play games safely again.

Lesson: Good diagnostics matter. Attention to detail matters even more.

If your tech issues have been dismissed or unresolved elsewhere, I’m always happy to take another look.

When proactive beats reactive - saving clients from IT headaches.

Recently, I proactively tested a firmware update on my own network storage equipment (a QNAP NAS). Good thing I did - I quickly discovered a significant issue that would have locked users out of their shared files after updating.

Knowing a valued client was using the same hardware, I immediately alerted them to the issue and advised them to hold off. Within days, the vendor confirmed the issue and announced a fix in an upcoming firmware release.

By testing proactively, I helped my client avoid downtime, frustration, and revenue loss.

This is why proactive IT support matters. It's not just about fixing problems - it’s about preventing them altogether.

Are you confident your technology is proactively protecting your business?

If not, let’s talk - I’m here to make sure you never lose sleep over IT again.

Have you ever avoided a big IT issue by catching it early? I’d love to hear about it below!

Can I Use Free Software to Manage My Small Business Computer Logins?

If you're a small business owner, you know that keeping your computers and user logins organised can be a real headache. You might be wondering, 'Is there a free and easy way to manage this without breaking the bank?' Well, the good news is, there is! In this article, we'll explore how you can use free tools to streamline your computer logins and user management, saving you time and stress.

What's the Problem?

Imagine this: You have a small team, each with their own computer. They all need access to shared files on a network storage device, and you might be using a cloud-based email service. Managing individual logins on each computer and the network storage can quickly become a nightmare. Passwords get forgotten, new employees need accounts created, and you're constantly dealing with access issues. This is where centralised user management comes in.

The Solution: Microsoft Entra ID Free

Microsoft Entra ID Free offers a fantastic solution for small businesses. Think of it as a central hub for managing your users and their access to computers and applications. Here's how it works:

Centralised User Management: Instead of creating separate logins for each computer, you can manage all your users from one place. This makes it easy to add, remove, or change user accounts.

Single Sign-On (SSO): With Entra ID, your employees can log in to their Windows computers using a single set of credentials. No more remembering multiple passwords!

Windows Integration: Entra ID works seamlessly with Windows 10 and 11 Professional, allowing you to 'join' your computers to your organisation's network. (Important note: You'll need the Professional version of Windows, not the Home edition.)

Network Storage Integration: If you use a network storage device for file sharing, Entra ID can often be set up to allow single login to that as well, simplifying access to your shared files.

It's Free!: The free tier of Microsoft Entra ID offers all these essential features, making it a cost-effective solution for small businesses.

Why should you care? Because simplifying your IT management frees up your time to focus on growing your business. No more wasting hours on password resets or troubleshooting login issues. With Entra ID, you can rest assured that your user access is secure and organised.

Alternatives

You might be wondering if there are other options. While there are other cloud based user management systems available, they typically involve paid subscriptions or free trials. For a long-term, free solution, Microsoft Entra ID is hard to beat.

If you're ready to take control of your computer logins and simplify your IT management, Microsoft Entra ID Free is a great place to start. If you want to know more, or need help setting this up, feel free to get in touch. We can help you navigate the process and ensure your IT is working for you, not against you.

When lightning strikes - literally…

An elderly couple once contacted me after their home had been struck by lightning. Every device was fried - phone lines scorched, wiring damaged, and their family PC completely destroyed.

Another technician’s brief assessment left them confused and even asked more of them - expecting the couple to dismantle their PC themselves to verify internal damage.

I stepped in and provided a clear, detailed, jargon-free assessment for their insurer. The claim was settled quickly, and their damaged equipment replaced new-for-old, hassle-free.

The relief on their faces wasn’t just about the computer - it was about finally feeling someone understood and genuinely cared enough to get the job done right, first time.

Technology issues should never add stress to an already stressful situation.
Integrity, clarity, and genuine care - that’s what I stand for.

If you ever find yourself feeling overwhelmed by IT, just reach out. I’m here to help.
