McIntosh ML1 Loudspeaker Mk II - one of our favourite speakers here at VAL HiFi.
First introduced in 1970, the ML1 was the first loudspeaker ever produced by McIntosh. More than fifty years later, the ML1 Mk II revisits that original mid-century design, retaining its unmistakably vintage proportions while completely re-engineering what sits inside.
The ML1 Mk II is a sealed 4-way loudspeaker using five drivers: a 12-inch woofer, twin 4-inch lower-midrange drivers, a 2-inch soft-dome upper midrange and a ¾-inch titanium-dome tweeter. The 12-inch woofer incorporates McIntosh’s LD/HP magnetic circuit technology, extending bass response down to 27Hz without the external equaliser required by the original ML1.
Designed to work with amplifiers from 75 to 600 watts, the ML1 combines serious power handling with an unusually wide listening area, while separate high- and low-frequency crossover sections allow bi-wiring or bi-amping.
The cabinet is constructed from a combination of solid and veneered American Walnut with a satin finish, accompanied by a matching dedicated stand and removable black knit grille. The build quality is astounding, closer to a piece of bespoke furniture than factory line speaker cabinets. These will sit pride of place in any home or listening space.
