Colour Management: Why is it important?

Colour management is responsible for all these colour conversions from one device to another, something you likely only notice when things go wrong, such as when a printout does not match the colours you see on the screen.

There are two basic things you always need to keep in mind when it comes to colour management: Every device has its own colour profile, and every image file has a colour gamut.

Even the best monitor cannot perform optimally if it has been placed incorrectly on the desk.

Current recommendations are that the screen should sit directly in front of the user.
If the monitor is to the side or too wide, the user will have to constantly turn their head to view the screen, leading to uncomfortable postures, causing tension in their shoulders and neck region, as well as headaches.

The optimal height of the screen should be set so the top line of the screen lies below the horizontal line of vision, allowing the eye to sit at a natural gaze.

Tim Flach’s work doesn’t end with the shutter click. In fact, for him, that’s where it begins.

As a trained painter, he still approaches photographs like canvas: breaking them down, rebuilding them, drawing from visual principles mastered by Renaissance painters. “I’m constantly asking, ‘How does the eye move through this picture?’”

He doesn’t merely idealise the image. He reintroduces imperfection by brushing raw details back into the frame, "placing them exactly where they serve the emotional flow of the picture.” This delicate dance between control and chaos, polish and grit, reflects a broader shift in how we perceive photography in the AI era.

As Tim sees it, the question isn’t just whether an image is real; it’s how it matches up to our expectations of what is real.

The importance of setting up ergonomic workstations is a topic on everyone’s lips. However, hardly anyone seems to know how to create a good work setup, and why a well-designed computer workstation is essential.

A key requirement for an ergonomic workstation is a correctly positioned desk. Where possible, your workstation should not be set up directly in front of a window.

If a window is located directly behind a monitor, the difference in brightness in comparison to the display will be much too high throughout the day. This can result in eye fatigue or headaches.

On the other hand, if the window faces your back, this can create annoying reflections on your monitor.
The ideal desk should therefore be positioned perpendicular to the window surfaces.

As so many professional photographers will tell you, being a photographer is only ever part of the picture.

"Even if you’re the best photographer in the world, if you don’t know how to deal with people or market yourself, then it’s always going to be a little bit of a struggle"

David Clark, Senior Specialist in Photography at the University of Portsmouth, explained to us how they help prepare their students for professional life, beyond the technical aspect of taking the photo: “We run a module that’s based on professional practices and work experience. That covers things like risk assessments, insurance, model releases, image licensing”

Do you typically work in a bright office or near a window? Then glare on a monitor is probably something you have experienced before when working.

EIZO FlexScan monitors are treated with an anti-glare coating on the LCD panel, greatly reducing reflections from external light sources. Not only does this make the screen more visible, but it also reduces eye fatigue caused by eye tension from glare. Quality antireflection technology also prevents users from sitting with poor posture by reducing their need to slouch towards the screen.

Clive Booth: The photographer makes the difference.

If a photograph can create or be part of the legacy of an individual, that raises the question: What part does the photographer play in that legacy?

“Photography is a really strange art form, a strange medium, because if you had two photographers, set them standing side by side with the same equipment to take the same picture, they would be different.

It proves the point that photography, if it’s good, comes from your soul, from your heart."

Most of EIZO's FlexScan monitors come with auto-brightness and eco-view, allowing them to match the ambient brightness of your room. Not only is this beneficial for protecting your eyes whilst working by reducing eye strain. Auto-brightness is also beneficial because it reduces power consumption, saving on electricity and operating costs.

Choosing the right monitor is crucial to working efficiently and maintaining your health. There are several ways that EIZO's FlexScan monitors support you during your workday:

EIZO FlexScan monitors have an optional ‘Paper Mode’ colour function for a more natural colour temperature and contrast ratio to produce a display similar to that of blank paper, helping to reduce eye strain whilst working.
