SCAM TEXT ALERT !!!!!!!

If you receive a text message like the one below, do not click on the link. This will direct you to a website which will ask you to download an app called Flubot, it can take over devices and spy on phones to gather sensitive data, including online banking details.

It only affects Android phones.

If you do get such a text then delete it immediately, if you have clicked on the link and installed the app then you can get advice and help from The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/guidance/flubot-guidance-for-text-message-scam or alternatively contact us here at Planet PC and we can go through the options available to you.

So we all have to be wary this Christmas against scam emails, below I have set out the latest to start hitting inboxes, as you can see from the mail it looks like an email from Companies House, but there are a few little clues which give it away. The first is Companies House would never send an email with a complaint, the second clue is the statement 'You can view the document using Microsoft Office Excel(macros must be enabled in order to use this workbook)' by enabling macros in a workbook you are literally giving permission to the document to run anything on your computer, you should never enable macros unless you are absolutely sure the document is safe, but the biggest clue is when you hover over the link as you can see from the second picture it is not going to Companies House but is going to an address 'express.shop.ge'

So it appears the scammers are out and about again, we have received hundreds of phone calls from our customers asking us if it was truly Microsoft/BT/Talk Talk etc etc phoning them and informing them that they had system problems, to put it bluntly......it wasn't. So you don't get caught out by these, well we can only call them Criminals we have put down some rules which if you follow will certainly help protect you and your systems. Rule 1. Always make sure your PC or Laptop has the latest updates installed. Rule 2. Make certain you are running an Anti-Virus program or security suite, and it’s up to date. Rule 3. Never click on a link in an email until you are sure it’s genuine, you can check this easily, for instance if the email says it's from BT then hover over the link and a box will come up showing the address it is going to. Rule 4. If you are asked to click a link and you’re not too sure don’t, instead type the link in yourself. Rule 5. Nobody knows if you have a problem with your computer, anyone who phones up out of the blue are scammers no matter who they say they are! Rule 7. When you go to a website, check it has the padlock on in the address field, any Company worth its salt will have a secure website. Rule 8. Never ever give any security details to anyone. Rule 9. Do not let anyone log onto your computer remotely unless you really can trust them, letting them onto your computer is the same as opening your front door and letting a complete stranger into your house. Rule 10. Always make a backup of your personal data, this is vital and our staff at Planet PC will be more than happy to show you what equipment you need and how to do it. If you do feel you may have fallen for one of these scam calls then stop using your PC or Laptop and phone us immediately, we will be able to assess the situation and advise the best way to move forward.
