You know you want technology in your home. Choosing who to trust with it is the harder part.

Here are some things we suggest to look out for when making that decision:

✨Experience — can they show you homes they’ve completed, not just products they sell?

✨Depth of skills — who’s actually on the team, from design through to installation?

✨Accreditation — are they recognised by bodies like CEDIA, the global association for home technology professionals?

When designing a home cinema, one of the key aspects is getting the layout right and understanding the proportions of the room.

Add too much, with oversized seating, too many rows, a screen out of scale with the space, and the room feels heavy and uncomfortable rather than immersive. Add too little, and it feels sparse and underwhelming.

Every room has its own dimensions and sightlines to work with, and the layout has to respond to all of it before anything else is decided.

Once it's right, we can then work on adding the right technology to the space.

Home cinemas and media rooms are one of the fastest-growing spaces we're asked to design, and getting them right takes more than a big screen. Acoustics, architecture, design and technology all have to work as one from day one.

To understand how to implement them into your designs, we are hosting two sessions of the RIBA & BIID accredited CPD, 'Designing Home Cinemas'. The first will take place at our supplier Habitech's showroom, an award-winning venue featuring four dedicated cinema rooms, and the other at our showroom at Sky House Design Centre.

Making audio more discreet in the home.

It’s a conversation we have often. When it comes to audio, there are a number of ways to approach it, some homeowners want speakers to disappear entirely into the ceiling, others are happy for a grille to stay visible, so long as it complements the interiors.

Paul walks through two approaches: fully flush in-ceiling speakers, and small-aperture options designed to sit quietly within the room.

Either way, the goal stays the same - sound that feels considered.
