Some of the least glamorous things in web design are also the most important ones…

👉 Keeping WordPress plugins updated to improve security and performance

👉 Having a homepage that’s clear, simple and immediately tells visitors what you do

👉 Compressing images before uploading them instead to improve site speed

👉 Knowing which pages people are reading, where they’re coming from, and which ones are sending them away

👉 Booking a website health check instead of a full redesign when actually a few targeted improvements would do the job.

All the less glamorous, genuinely useful stuff is how I spend about 80% of my time... I do think that’s kinda chic 😜

I had a lovely email this week from a client who wanted to let me know she thought the work I’d done was outstanding 😊

has been running fitness classes for women in Redditch for over 22 years. What I’d done was spend time doing a full audit of the website, looking at it the way a new visitor would.

The question I get asked most often is “how long will my website take?”

The answer depends almost entirely on how quickly content comes in.

Photos, copy, brand files, feedback on designs.

These are what keep a project moving.

When they arrive quickly, websites get built quickly.

When they don’t, everything waits.

If you’re commissioning a website this year, the most valuable thing you can do before you start is gather your content.

Even rough notes and phone photos are a better starting point than nothing.

Bear with me as this isn’t the most exciting topic, but the amount of businesses that don’t realise their website needs ongoing maintenance is scary.

This isn’t about a website refresh, or a redesign. Just regular, unglamorous upkeep.

For WordPress sites especially, themes, plugins, and core software all require regular updates.

When they fall behind, load speeds drop, security vulnerabilities appear, and eventually things break.

Most business owners launching a website are never told this is something they need to manage, then they wonder six months later why the website is slow or unreliable.

If you have a website and no maintenance arrangement in place, it is worth addressing before it becomes a problem.

AI website builders are a genuinely useful tool for small businesses.

They’re faster, cheaper, and accessible without technical knowledge. But there are a few things worth keeping in mind if you’re using one!

🤖 AI doesn’t know your brand. It will produce something that looks modern but feels generic. The differentiation still requires human input.

🤖 SEO foundations are often missing. Things like heading structure, metadata, alt text, and internal linking need checking and are usually still needed to be done somewhat manually.

🤖 The content will certainly like it was AI-generated... because it was. It needs editing by someone who actually knows the business.

🤖Mobile experience is where AI-built sites most commonly fall down. It needs testing properly across devices.

This isn’t an argument against AI tools. It’s just a reminder that they still need human judgment to work properly.

I’ve been a designer since before the first website was introduced to the world, and I’ve worked on countless since. Yup.

DIY websites are a life saver for the cost conscious, entrepreneurial, business owner.

But when a new client comes to me to fix or improve a website, I can almost guarantee I’ll see one if not all of these five blunders.

We all learn from mistakes, and none are dramatic.

But each can cost you new business.

This website was built nearly ten years ago and had never been properly looked after.

No maintenance. No updates. No one watching it.

I didn’t build it and I didn’t design it.

I inherited it and, when I looked under the bonnet, it wasn’t in a good place. Outdated PHP, an unsupported setup, and a real security risk.

The client had no idea (most people don’t).

It’s now fully migrated to the JR Digital server.

✔️ Stable, secure, and safe.

A design refresh is next, but that’s up to the client and can wait. The important thing is sorted.

If your website was built a few years ago and hasn’t had much attention since, it’s worth a look.

The problems are rarely visible until they aren’t.

If you’ve been writing blog content but not seeing Google traction, the issue usually isn’t the content itself.

Most people update an old post and republish it, but leave the original date unchanged. Google reads that as old content, regardless of what’s on the page now. One small step, completely overlooked.
