Always so exciting to receive advance copies! The design of This is tomorrow is partly inspired by an iconic catalogue produced by modernist typographer Edmund Wright, features some key British art from the 20th century and even includes quotes from JD Ballard. Utterly fabulous project and a great pleasure to work with the team at Thames & Hudson.

Received BNF 83 today, this is the 14th edition of the book published since I redesigned it in 2015. The current edition is 500 pages longer than BNF70! Since then the design has needed to be adapted to cope with numerous new features, but the core design was developed with this in mind. In an era where the lifespan of a design can be measured in months, it is great to see that all that hard work paid off and is still going strong all this time later. To put that into context, that is over 300,000 pages of critical information (with over 200 hierarchies) that has to be clear at a glance for the millions of people that use it.

All designers are guilty of cherry picking the projects they show on their websites and portfolios. The temptation to show off the highest budget jobs with high production budgets can be irresistible. But we all need bread and butter work and it is often the smaller projects with smaller budgets that require the most skill. This project from last year was printed digitally at a very modest cost. Being able to make the most of available resources to produce some distinctive is something I am often required to do. Great project with a fantastic client.

Did not get the chance to post about this beautifully printed and bound book by my friends at Graphicom in Verona in 2021. Inspired by the work of Giambattista Bodoni, the book is typeset in Russian and English typeset in the fount Parmagiano (the nicest version of Bodoni in my view). Total joy to design this book with photography by André Kertész, Andreas Feininger and Irving Browning amongst others.

Really pleased to receive copies of Gone Viral beautifully printed and bound in the US by the super helpful team at Meridian Print. Gone Viral presents a stunning series of contemporary works that confront issues such as Covid, BLM and the threat to US democracy. It was a total pleasure to work for such an informed client who not only values good design but was insistent that the design have some wow factor. The book would not have been possible without the pre-press work by Jenny Scarfe Beckett. The final cherry on the cake was the opportunity to use the typeface Heldane Display on the cover and title page.

Very sad to hear about the passing of visionary designer Ken Garland. To repeat an earlier Instagram post: ‘Only two things could stop the graphic designer from growing up with rest of the technological world: a failure to familiarise himself with new areas of knowledge springing up alongside his own; and an inability to free himself from the tasks with which he is expects to be confronted.'
