🚀 VLAN vs VXLAN — What’s the Difference? 🌐

If you work with enterprise networks, data centers, or cloud infrastructure, understanding VLAN and VXLAN is essential.

🔵 VLAN — Virtual Local Area Network

VLANs provide Layer 2 segmentation within a network.

✅ Uses 802.1Q VLAN tagging
✅ VLAN ID provides up to 4094 usable VLANs
✅ Great for campus and traditional data-center segmentation
✅ Simple and widely supported
✅ Keeps broadcast domains logically separated

🟠 VXLAN — Virtual Extensible LAN

VXLAN takes Layer 2 segmentation and extends it across a Layer 3 IP underlay.

🔥 Uses a 24-bit VNI, providing about 16 million possible VXLAN segments
🔥 Encapsulates the original Ethernet frame inside UDP/IP
🔥 Uses UDP port 4789
🔥 Enables scalable data-center and cloud network overlays
🔥 Commonly deployed with VXLAN EVPN for control-plane learning and scalable fabric designs

⚡ Easy way to remember:

VLAN = Layer 2 segmentation
VXLAN = Layer 2 over Layer 3

Think of it this way:

🏢 VLAN: “Keep these devices separated inside my network.”

🌎 VXLAN: “Keep these logical networks connected across a larger IP fabric.”

💡 Network Engineer Tip:
VXLAN doesn’t replace the IP underlay—it builds an overlay on top of the Layer 3 underlay.

👨‍💻 Question for Network Engineers:
If you were designing a modern data center, would you choose traditional VLANs, VXLAN EVPN, or a combination of both?

🧠💻 TYPES OF COMPUTER MEMORY — KNOW THE BASICS!

Ever wondered what happens when your computer stores data temporarily or permanently? This infographic breaks down the major types of computer memory and storage in a simple way. 👇

🔹 ROM — Read Only Memory
Stores permanent instructions and is non-volatile, meaning data remains after power is turned off.

🔹 RAM — Random Access Memory
Provides temporary working memory for applications and processes. It is volatile, so its contents are lost when power is removed.

📌 RAM includes technologies such as:
• DRAM
• SRAM
• SDRAM
• DDR SDRAM
• DDR1 → DDR4

🔹 External Storage
💾 HDD — High-capacity magnetic storage
⚡ SSD — Faster storage with no moving parts
💿 CD — Optical storage
🔌 USB — Portable storage

💡 Easy way to remember:
RAM = Your computer’s work desk 🖥️
HDD/SSD = Your filing cabinet 🗄️
ROM = Permanent instructions 📖

Understanding the difference between volatile memory, non-volatile memory, RAM, ROM, and storage is essential for anyone learning computers, networking, systems, or IT infrastructure.

🌐 BASIC NETWORK DESIGN — FROM INTERNET TO DATACENTER

Ever wondered how a typical enterprise network is structured? Here’s a simple view 👇

🔹 Internet → Border Firewall → Border Router
🔹 Core Switch connects the major network segments
🔹 DMZ hosts externally accessible services
🔹 Campus Firewall protects user/office networks
🔹 Campus Network connects laptops, desktops & printers
🔹 Datacenter Firewall adds security around critical workloads
🔹 Datacenter hosts Application, File, Database & Virtualization Servers

💡 Key concept:
A good network design separates Internet access, DMZ services, campus users, and datacenter workloads into appropriate security and network zones.

This separation makes the environment easier to secure, troubleshoot, scale, and manage.

👨‍💻 Network Engineers: What would you add to this design?

🔐 IDS/IPS?
🌐 Load Balancer?
⚙️ Redundant Core?
☁️ Cloud Connectivity?
🛡️ Zero Trust / SASE?

🔐 IPsec VPN vs SSL VPN — Which One Should You Use? 🌐

VPNs are not all designed for the same job. The right choice depends on whether you need to connect entire networks or provide secure access to individual users.

🔵 IPsec VPN

Best suited for site-to-site connectivity:

🏢 Branch Office ↔ 🏢 Headquarters/Data Center
🔹 Connects entire subnets
🔹 Commonly uses IKE over UDP 500
🔹 UDP 4500 is used for NAT Traversal when NAT is present
🔹 IPsec can use ESP (IP protocol 50) when NAT-T isn't being used
🔹 Ideal for persistent network-to-network tunnels

🟢 SSL VPN

Commonly used for remote-access connectivity:

💻 Remote User → 🌐 Internet → 🛡️ VPN Gateway → 🏢 Corporate Network

🔹 Uses TLS/HTTPS-based connectivity in many deployments
🔹 TCP 443 is commonly used
🔹 Convenient for remote employees, contractors and administrators
🔹 Can provide browser-based or client-based access depending on the platform

⚡ Quick way to remember:

IPsec = Network-to-Network 🏢↔️🏢
SSL VPN = User-to-Network 💻↔️🏢

But remember: modern VPN products can support both IPsec and TLS/SSL-based remote access, so the exact behavior depends on the vendor and configuration.

👨‍💻 Network Engineer Challenge:
If you were designing this network, would you choose IPsec, SSL/TLS VPN, or both?
