How to identify if M365 apps are installed via Microsoft Store
You can identify Microsoft 365 apps installed via the Microsoft Store by checking the app source in Windows and looking for Store-style app behavior. Microsoft’s own support pages confirm that installed apps can be viewed in Settings > Apps > Installed apps, and Microsoft Store apps are tied to the Store-installed package model rather than the classic Office deployment path.
Fast checks
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and look for Microsoft 365/Office entries.
If the app looks like a Store app package and does not offer the normal Office repair/uninstall flow you expect from desktop Office, that is a strong sign it was installed through the Microsoft Store model.
In enterprise environments, Microsoft also documents the Store installation type separately from Click-to-Run, and the Store install type is the one being retired.

Best practical method
For IT teams, the cleanest approach is to inventory the device and verify the Office installation type against Microsoft’s supported installation models. For years, we were told that good security meant creating complicated passwords and changing them regularly. In reality, this often led people to make small, predictable changes to existing passwords or write them down somewhere, which did little to improve security.
