One David Manley prototype monoblock amp finished, three more to go... These power amplifiers were hand-wired by M. Manley himself, in his french home, using slightly unusual soviet and chinese tubes and state-of-the-art Lundahl output transformers. It sounds as good as you'd expect.

This Revox PR99 has been on m'y bench before for maintenance and bias adjustment. It's back for a change of VUmeter lightbulbs, a failing +21V rail and the usual necessary adjustments after some new caps are installed. A sturdy beast that one is.

Une place se libère dans notre atelier partagé à Pantin.

Nous sommes 7 créatifs (réalisation, motion design, designer, illustrateur...) et nous recherchons un.e colocataire.

La place sera libre à partir du 1er janvier.

Description :

- Surface 6 m2 dans une pièce de 15 m2 (tous les ateliers sont situés dans des pièces partagées à deux)
- Loyer tout compris (EDF, Internet fibre, charges foncières, ménage...) : 285€ / mois
- Surface totale de l'atelier : 96 m2
- Toit-Terrasse de 250 m2 avec un barnum pour bo**er dehors en été, un grand jardin fleuri et qui donne quelques légumes et des herbes aromatiques (participation au jardinage pas obligatoire !) un BBQ, des tables, des chaises, des transats, une sono... Bref, de quoi passer de très beaux après-midi au printemps et en été, et des soirées sympas.

I needed a sturdy, simple, dummy load to test amplifiers with. So I made one, mostly with spare parts from my studio, except for the non-inductive power transistors, the banana jacks and the BNC plugs. Every other part has been upcycled, as they call it now. It measures fine on every setting (4/8/16 ohms), and should be able to dissipate at least 400W, which is more than I need most of the time.

Cute little power supply for a Studer broadcast console. It kept blowing its fuse so I started to investigate.

NAD amplifiers sound good, despite some really shoddy layouts. Here's a typical problem :

Pic 1 - those two capacitors with their shrunk plastic housings are obviously in terrible shape. The two regulators close to them give off heat and, overtime, completely cooked the caps. So the caps started to drift, causing the regulators to overheat, cooking the caps even more... Absurdity exemplified.

Of course, when you see this, you know there's going to be cracked solder joints under the board.

So I reflowed the solder joints, and the amp works fine. But the caps need replacing, and they need to be placed further away from the regulators and resistors. That will be phase two.
