Your room is part of your speaker. Dutch & Dutch just design it that way from the start.

Most speakers throw bass in every direction. It hits the wall behind, comes back late, and you end up with that thick uneven low end nobody can work on. The usual fix is bass traps the size of a fridge, or a DSP trying to undo it afterwards.

The 6c and the 8c are cardioid. They send far less energy backwards, so the wall behind stops being the problem and becomes part of the design — that's the orange wall in the picture.

Then you run the app with a measurement mic, it works out the filters and pushes them straight to the speakers. Mostly in the bass, because that's where the room does the damage.

It won't fix a bad position and it doesn't replace treatment. But it starts somewhere much better than a neutral speaker dropped in a room and crossed fingers.

An R2R DAC and a dedicated amp, inside a 7.4 g earbud. 🎧

HIFIMAN just launched the Svanar Wireless 2, the second generation of its true wireless in-ears, and it brings the brand's headphone thinking down to earbud size.

The heart of it is the new HYMALAYA Mini chip: HIFIMAN's own R2R DAC, with twice as many resistors as the previous version in a space five times smaller. The goal: more detail and a wider soundstage.

Where most TWS earbuds run everything off one chip, the Svanar Wireless 2 splits the jobs. A dedicated balanced class AB amp (45 mW) drives a 10 mm dynamic driver with HIFIMAN's nanoparticle-coated Topology Diaphragm.

An eighties design, still in service in 2026. Here's why.

The easy answer is "analogue warmth", and it's the wrong one. Emulations have got very good at the static behaviour of these circuits — the curves, the harmonic profile, the general character.

What they still struggle with is what happens when you push the circuit in ways it wasn't modelled at. Real components interact: the power supply sags, the transformer saturates, the tube's operating point shifts, and all of that happens simultaneously and dependently. A plugin models a snapshot of those relationships. The hardware just does it.

Whether you can hear the difference depends entirely on how hard you're driving it. Gentle compression on a mix bus? Honestly, the plugin is fine. Heavy program-dependent compression where the circuit is genuinely working? That's where the hardware still separates.

Which is the actual case for it — not that analogue is better, but that it stays consistent at the extremes where models get thin.

An €8,000 speaker on a shelf is a €2,000 speaker.

Three things are happening when you put a monitor on furniture.

The surface resonates. A desk or shelf is a large panel with its own modes. Your speaker excites them, and they radiate — late, and at frequencies you didn't ask for. You hear it as thickness in the low mids that no EQ removes cleanly, because the source isn't the speaker.

Boundary reinforcement. A surface immediately under or behind the speaker adds low-frequency energy. Sometimes that sounds nice. It is never accurate, and it changes every time you move anything.

Height. If the tweeter isn't at ear height, you're listening off-axis vertically, where most monitors fall apart fastest.

A proper stand fixes all three at once: mass to stop the resonance, decoupling to stop the transmission, and the right height by design.

This is the least glamorous purchase in a monitoring chain and one of the largest measurable improvements available. It is also, conveniently for the industry, the one nobody makes YouTube videos about.

Almost every wireless earphone on the market fixes its sound in software. This one doesn't.

Two design decisions set the FoKus Artemis apart, and both go against how the category normally works.

Passive tuning instead of DSP. A custom dynamic driver handles the low end, with balanced armatures on mids and treble. The tonal balance comes from internal acoustic tuning — physical, not computed. Most true wireless earphones lean heavily on digital correction to fix what the hardware doesn't do. This is the harder way round, and it's the reason a company that builds custom in-ear monitors would approach it this way.

Passive isolation instead of noise cancelling. No ANC. The shells are CNC-machined aluminium shaped to sit in the co**ha and block sound mechanically. ANC works, but it alters phase and dynamics to do its job. Blocking the noise physically leaves the signal alone.

Whether that's the right trade for you depends on where you listen. On a plane, ANC wins — nothing passive matches it for engine drone. On a train, in an office, walking around, the isolation here is enough and you keep the sound intact.

We sell cables. Here's where your money does something, and where it doesn't.

Where it genuinely matters:

Connectors. A contact that oxidises or a tired solder joint gives you crackles, dropped channels, dead sessions. This is the single biggest reliability factor, and it's where the gap between an €8 cable and a €40 one is real.

Shielding, in a noisy environment. Switching supplies, Wi-Fi everywhere, mains runs nearby — proper shielding saves you hours hunting a buzz.

Length and impedance, in the digital domain. An AES or coax cable out of spec over a long run doesn't "sound worse" — it drops out. It's binary.

Mechanical quality. A cable you plug and unplug every day has to survive that. Boring, and the thing that matters most day to day.

Where it's much less clear:

Exotic conductor metals, directional signal cable, four-figure interconnects. The claimed differences generally don't survive a properly conducted blind test. We're not saying nobody hears anything — we're saying we've never seen a solid demonstration, and we won't sell you something on that basis.

Our advice: buy well-made, well-shielded, well-terminated cable, and put the rest into your acoustics. The return isn't comparable.
