VINTAGE IDENTITY PAPERS

There is something fascinating about old identity papers. Moments frozen in time, personal details, photos that never fail to move me. In the early days, any photo would do and everything was handwritten. Then the information changed and the documents became more secure. I have a soft spot for the ones bearing fingerprints.

And then there are all the club cards, membership cards, all those small everyday ephemera. I always wonder how they end up at a brocante rather than in the hands of descendants. But that is for your greatest pleasure, and mine as a brocanteur.

They always go quickly when I offer them for sale. The ones I am showing here have all found a new home: these are photos of pieces already sold, none of them are available. It is simply so they are not forgotten.

NO FLEA MARKET THIS SUNDAY

It’s Sunday, and for once I’m not wandering the aisles of a flea market. My to-do list before leaving for England is far too long, and I want to be able to fully enjoy this trip.

But I didn’t want to let this Sunday go by without taking you treasure hunting with me. So here are a few photos of the Sunday flea market in Carpentras, taken over the years. Stalls, objects, morning light, finds and memories.

Carpentras is a place I always love coming back to, and these pictures remind me why I do this work as a brocanteur.

NEWS FROM THE CATS

It has been a long time since we last gave you any news. We must admit we are content with very little.

The summer was scorching. Even for us, who love the heat so much, it became hard to stay outside. So we waited, stretched out somewhere cool, for things to calm down.

And now, at last, the Indian summer. The days are mild, the sun is gentle again, and we can enjoy the garden once more.

At home, nothing to complain about. Our human keeps bringing back lovely boxes and all sorts of objects for us to settle into. It is always a pleasure to leave our spare fur on them. It seems to drive him a little mad, though we really cannot see why.

The latest arrival: a superb armchair, brought in yesterday. We did try to sharpen our claws on it, but he took care to cover it with fabric bags. We have not given up hope.

All in all, a fine cat’s life among the brocante finds.

LA PEINTURE EN LETTRES, A BOOK BY MORGANE CÔME

I have known Morgane Côme for a while, and I am happy to finally share her new book, published by L’Échappée. It is a true masterpiece and a must-have for anyone who loves letters as much as I do.

Morgane is a sign painter based in Quimperlé, in Brittany. After five years as a graphic designer in London, she discovered the craft during a trip to New York, and she has devoted herself to it since 2014. Today she passes on her knowledge through workshops and carries out serious research into the history of her trade. She also wrote the essay for Lettres Décoratives, published by Letterform Archive in San Francisco.

Everything in this book is fascinating: the history of the profession, the gestures, the tools, and the voices of both the old masters and the new generation. I have a particular soft spot for the old photographs she unearthed, shop signs and storefronts from another time that you will not find anywhere else.

I placed it on a few plates from my own collection, 19th-century lettering albums. They seemed made to meet.

MR CUP UK & IRELAND TYPE TOUR

In a week my friend 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝗶𝘀 𝗪𝗶𝗱𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗻 | 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼 and I set off on a little road trip. From October 21 to 28 we will drive from the south of England up to Birmingham and Manchester, skipping London this time since I explored its shops at length on my last visit. Then from October 29 to November 2 we will cross the Irish Sea for Dublin and its surroundings.

The idea is simple: rent a car, take turns at the wheel, wander from town to town, and visit the craftsmen and designers we have admired for years. Meetings are already set with David A Smith MBE Annie Atkins Flora Fricker , and we will stop at the Pen Museum in Birmingham, a little temple to the steel nib and the written word. In Manchester we will also visit Foilco , the foil makers I have been working with for years on my calendar and Denis did this Behaus posters together. I cannot wait to finally see where the shine comes from.

And since I am a brocanteur, we will not drive past a single flea market, antique fair or junk shop along the way.

PÉZENAS, AUTUMN EDITION

Yesterday was the Pézenas brocante, held twice a year, in spring and in autumn. It stretches along a long road that runs right through the town. After several years of roadworks, the renovation is finally finished, and it was a real pleasure to see the brocante laid out along it again.

Go early: it’s very popular, and from 10:30 onwards you can barely move!

Here are all the beautiful things I spotted. I also visited the permanent antique shops, which hold some truly monumental pieces, like this Parisian Art Nouveau wooden shopfront. It was so immense I could only photograph part of it.

A WEEKEND OF PAPER AND BROCANTE

I wanted to hold a paper sale for you today, but in the end it wasn’t possible. So it moves to tomorrow, Saturday, at 8pm (Paris time), right here on Instagram.

On Sunday I’ll be at the Pézenas brocante, autumn edition. It takes place twice a year, once in spring and once now, and it winds through the whole of this beautiful town, a true dealers’ town. On top of the one-day stallholders, all the antique shops are open to explore. Here are a few photos of the Pézenas brocante over the years, a brocante I’m very fond of.

Meanwhile, if you’re near Lyon, Stéphane Steph will be opening the 35 m² container at the Village des Brocanteurs in Tignieu all weekend.

A. LACROIX & CIE, PARIS PERSONAL COLLECTION

For a while now, I have been quietly collecting everything I can find from A. Lacroix & Cie, a Parisian house founded by the chemist Adolphe Lacroix and specialised in vitrifiable colours for painting on porcelain and glass.

These mineral pigments only reveal their true colour once fired, fusing with the glaze forever. That is why the house made these porcelain palettes, real colour charts where every shade was painted and fired so painters could see exactly what they would get. They often sat inside the lid of a wooden paint box.

I was lucky enough to find this plate chart recently, and above all, thanks to Stéphane Steph , I was able to gather a large quantity of tubes. Here they are all together, the little round tins of powdered pigment and the original boxes, each tube still wearing its label. Lacroix colours were so renowned in the 19th century that china painters as far as America considered them the standard, and a sample plate from 1887 is now part of the Cooper Hewitt museum collection in New York.

I am so happy to see all of this together at last. And I think this is only the beginning.
