We've had some (more) questions about the choice of joysticks in the SilverFox controllers. And why SilverFox has actively chosen to continue with the 4-way joystick.

So, for those who are wondering about the differences between the 4-way joystick and "360" hall-joystick, and the SilverFox reasoning for keeping the 4-way...this post is for you!

Here is our experience, and a few points to focus on:

Safety! When driving, especially during offroad conditions, you want to make basic adjustments to your map view, without actively looking at your screen. This is where the micro switches or toggle switches are unbeatable. Because of the set screen movement "per push", you can feel on your fingertips how many steps the map has been moved, without even looking at it. When the road or path is safer the map view is already set, as expected, and it is easier to make minor corrections with short glances at the screen.

With PlayStation-type "360" hall- joysticks are different. There's no feedback from the switch. Whereever you turn the joystick, you have to actively look at the map while operating. This is the safety issue, that defeats the main purpose of the navigation controller. Technically speaking, the hall sensor has no mechanical contact between the hall-component and magnet, but all other mechanical limitations (rubber handles, springs and wiring) are still there, making the servicing of the component significantly more challenging, if not impossible.
