📊 AI is transforming pathology, speeding up analysis, enhancing diagnostic accuracy, and addressing global healthcare resource shortages.

Featured in a recent special supplement of Talouselämä, our CEO, Jukka Tapaninen, shares how Aiforia is paving the way for the future of diagnostics. By automating time-consuming, repetitive tasks such as counting cells, measuring tumor size, or scanning for specific bacteria, AI frees up valuable time for pathologists.

Instead of spending tens of minutes on manual visual assessments, pathologists can focus on their core expertise and only verify the AI findings. "Digitalization and AI-based routine analytics offer concrete solutions for the everyday work of pathology laboratories,” says Jukka Tapaninen.

From Fimlab in Finland and the Paris hospital district (AP-HP) in France to the Mayo Clinic in the US, Aiforia's AI solutions are helping increase the speed, accuracy, and consistency of analyzing large, complex medical images.

📈 Poster P132: "The Impact of Artificial Intelligence Assistance on Interobserver Agreement in ER, PR, HER2, and Ki-67 Assessment"
🗣️ By Fadime Gul Salman (Turkiye) et al.

In this study, Salman et al. evaluated how the Aiforia® Breast Suite affects agreement among pathologists scoring breast cancer biomarkers in 296 cases. The use of AI increased diagnostic consistency and reduced scoring discrepancies for ER, PR, and HER2, notably decreasing complete disagreement for HER2 from 21% to 14%.

📊 "A Novel Prediction tool (AIFORIA) for Classifying Spindle Cell Lesion subtypes using Deep Learning on H&E Sections" by Dr. Kristijan Skok (Austria)
🗓️ June 19 at 14:50 CEST
📍 Session: “Machine Learning and Algorithm Development II"

In this proof-of-concept study, Skok et al. evaluated the performance of two AI models developed with Aiforia® Create, using standard CNNs and Aiforia's proprietary Foundation Engine, to classify complex spindle cell lesion subtypes from routine H&E slides via a weakly supervised approach. Key highlights from the study:

1. The standard CNN-based AI model showed strong sensitivity for solitary fibrous tumors (SFT) but struggled with class imbalance.
2. The AI model built on Foundation Engine provided a more balanced predictive approach, achieving an overall concordance of 64.9% while maintaining solid detection rates for Synovial Sarcoma (66.2% recall).
3. Accurately identifying MPNST cases remains a complex challenge across all tested architectures, highlighting the need for further dataset expansion and targeted model optimization to enhance clinical applicability.

Speeding up image analysis time from weeks to minutes. ⏱️ That's how AI is transforming preclinical synucleinopathy research.

Traditional characterization of histological samples in neurodegenerative disease research is labor-intensive and time-consuming. To tackle this bottleneck, a team of researchers at KU Leuven developed an innovative AI-powered pipeline for high-throughput, unbiased analysis of mouse brain tissues.

The study introduces five specialized AI models, trained and deployed using Aiforia® Create, capable of autonomously identifying brain regions and detecting critical markers of:

🧠 Neurodegeneration
🧠 Neuroinflammation
🧠 Alpha-synuclein protein aggregation

The results? ➡️ Accurate, region-specific insights at cell-level resolution through automated quantification, reducing analysis time from weeks down to minutes.
