The records of 500 million customers of the hotel group Marriott International have been involved in a data breach.
The hotel chain said the guest reservation database of its Starwood division had been compromised by an unauthorized party. It said an internal investigation found an attacker had been able to access the Starwood network since 2014 !! It looks like Marriot had encrypted payment card information, but it also seems likely they left the encryption keys next to the encrypted data which is like locking the door of your house but putting the keys under the mat.
It is so important these days to use a website firewall like SharkGate (https://www.sharkgate.net) to protect your site. Also, make sure that firewall includes sophisticated data breach monitors as the SharkGate does. Plus it is so important to get a team of security experts like the OneHourSiteFix team ( https://www.onehoursitefix.com - One Hour Site Fix) to do a full scan of your website to ensure the hackers are not already on there and are hidden away with all their tools.
An interesting quote from James Snook (Deputy director of business, crime and skills in the office for cybersecurity) that it would be good for all business owners to read and take seriously
“My message for companies that think they haven’t been attacked is: “You’re not looking hard enough”.
FYI here are 16 stores in the last year, that if you have shopped at your data might have been stolen
