What do Graend by Hellon, Epical, Mallow, Nortal, Netum Group and Sulava have in common?

They all demonstrated exceptional performance in 2023 despite the tough market conditions!

According to Witted Insights H2 2023 report, Graend is the fastest-growing software consultancy in Finland 2023 with 43,8% headcount growth. In the same category – consultancies employing less than 100 – also Epical (41.2%), Mallow (36.4%), Meltlake Suomi (36.2%) and Rebase (31,3%) achieved remarkable growth.

Among consultancies employing more than 100, Nortal (17%), Netum (15.3%), and Sulava (14.3%) stood out. A heartfelt congratulations to everyone!

These growth percentages really stand out when looking at the average 2023 YTD growth of Nordic software consultancies:

🇫🇮 Finland: 4,6% (19,3% in 2022)
🇳🇴 Norway: 6,1%, (14,6% in 2022)
🇸🇪 Sweden: 4,8% (5,4% in 2022)
🇩🇰 Denmark: -0,3% (26,5% in 2022)

📢 There’s light at the end of the tunnel – good news from the Finnish software consulting market!

The private sector’s IT project supply has been dragging behind the thriving public sector for a long time, but now the supply is cheering up in the private sector, too. 🙌

According to Witted Insights October report, the number of open private sector projects reached the highest level since February. However, there is still a long way to go compared to last year, with a 51.3% decline in open projects.

The public sector remains the safe haven for those who value long and steady projects, and there are plenty of available projects. 👉 The public sector witnessed a remarkable 135,7% increase in the number of open IT projects in October 2023 compared to October 2022.

Nordic software consultancies keep facing tougher times, new Witted Insights report shows. The average growth percentage of the 150+ monitored companies was close to zero in October:

🇫🇮 Average growth percentage 0,4%, the fastest-growing company was Rebase with 8,9% headcount growth.

🇳🇴 Average growth percentage 0,4%, Semcon grew the most with 12,3%.

🇸🇪 Average growth percentage 0,5%, the fastest-growing company was Fastdev with 11,1%.

🇩🇰 Average growth percentage 0,3%, Innologic grew the fastest with 12,5%.

Also the average YTD growth percentage in October 2023 vs. October 2022 is quite revealing:

🇫🇮 4,9% vs 18,0%
🇳🇴 6,4% vs 14,5%
🇸🇪 4,8% vs 5,0%
🇩🇰 1,6% vs 25,1%

What ruins the IT industry's reputation are the yesterday's dinosaurs who convince their customers that they lack the skills and abilities to develop digital services, and therefore advise them to outsource it to a vendor. Vendor lock clicks shut and the cash flow begins.

There is a cure: Companies that make their customers superheroes by transferring skills in order to level up client's software capabilities. These saviors put clients where they belong – to the driver's seat – and will win clients' hearts.

The latest edition of Witted Insights shows a tidal shift in the Nordic software consulting market: The share of companies decreasing in personnel is the biggest in the whole four year history of Insights report.

In April, from the companies followed in the report,

📉 79% decreased in Finland
📉 80% decreased in Norway
📉 68% decreased in Sweden
📉 70% decreased in Denmark.

At a time when most decline, the ones who grow really stand out. One of them is Iona, a small Finnish digital commerce agency specializing in strategy, customer experience and composable technology. We asked Mikko Mantila, the CEO of Iona, what the secret for them growing in these difficult times is.

”Without giving too much of our business secrets away, I would say our formula for growth has been:
A) continued client demand for digital commerce, especially in the composable technology area
B) our integrated and end-to-end project offering from strategy through design into development.”

Two Witted consultants – Jesper from Mavericks and Petri from Witted Partners– recently joined a US based project and visited their team in New York. The client explores water conservation, usage, and sustainability in homes to solve problems in water-stressed regions across the globe.

With his extensive experience in mobile and full-stack development, Jesper will be crafting exceptional user experiences for the client's app users. Petri, who is an internationally recognized designer with over 20 years of experience, will leverage his expertise to foster breakthrough ideas for the app UX and UI.

Here are Jesper and Petri’s thoughts about the trip to New York:

The latest edition of Witted Insights shows that Nordic software consultancies are facing tougher times, but most are still growing.

In all of the countries we are following, we're seeing less companies increasing their staff. The percentage of companies in report that grew in 2022 vs. 2023 is quite revealing.

Finland 🇫🇮 : in 2022 79% grew vs. in 2023 60% grew.
Sweden 🇸🇪 : in 2022 67% grew vs. in 2023 50% grew.
Norway 🇳🇴 : in 2022 90% grew vs. in 2023 50% grew.
Denmark 🇩🇰 : in 2022 76% grew vs. in 2023 50% grew.
