Most of my work is about making complex things easier to understand visually.
Over time, I became increasingly interested in a different kind of problem: numbers that are perfectly understandable on paper, but almost impossible to grasp intuitively once they become large enough.
A million. A billion. Tens or hundreds of billions.
We can read them, compare them and calculate with them — but that doesn’t necessarily mean we can picture the scale behind them.
That question eventually became The Long Number, a personal interactive project exploring how we perceive extreme wealth through distance, scale and comparison.
It starts from a reality you can relate to and gradually moves toward some of the largest personal fortunes in the world.
The Long Number is also a living project. It will keep evolving over time as I refine the experience, add new comparisons, expand the data and explore new ways of making these scales easier to understand.
It’s a little different from the kind of work I usually share here, but it comes from exactly the same obsession: finding a way to make difficult things easier to see.
