Designing a logo isnt as easy and simple as one may think. As designers we need to know alot about the company, or person we are designing for. As this information is subtely embeded into the design.
For instance, this customer wanted a logo for a Real Estate Agency. We never met, it was all done online. I could tell by her voice that she was quite young, (this is important to set the "style" that she will feel comfortable with). The font type has to be in accordance with the companies beliefs, vision....
The Brief, is what we as Designers love to have to be able to work. The Brief should be a Brief description of what the client wants the logo to portray. For instance, "we sell luxury homes, and use Travertino as our brand in all the interiors. We focus primarily on Foreign clients, who look for quality and exquisite taste."
Here we know that we ought to use Travertino in the Design, as its "the" feature they want to stand out. Luxury homes, means use of colours that transmit this, gold, white, and black for the classy/exquisite taste.
Now we can play with the ideas.
The first ideas were very basic, I used the marble/travertino as a background and lettering on top to see the effect.
Gradually I was given more information about who they were and who they sold to and it became easier to decide on the type of Font to use, and whether the colours were a good choice.
The black travertino was too dark so we opted for the lighter, white one which gives more amplitude, and evokes a more tranquil look to the logo. This with the thin gold border and black initials, in the centre, transmits quality and security. both adjectives that a property owner looks for in an Agency.
