:: London Design Biennale :: Design in an age of crisis
The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted how much our vulnerability to an infectious disease is impacted by our general health, wealth, ethnicity, gender, disability, age, surrounding environment and our living circumstances. The continued presence of endemic racial injustice has also come to the fore and shown that many systems and models have historically been designed to block equality. With so much unconscious or unspoken bias in design, taking a more humanity-centred and participatory approach to design will help to empower all members of our society – across divides of race, gender, ability and age. If design thinking can be focused on helping the most vulnerable or marginalized members of society, could we in fact end up with the best design outcome for everyone? Globally, there is currently very little trust within society, and ‘identity’ or ‘tribal’ politics is on the rise as people find it hard to listen to each other. We need to design better systems in order to exchange views and improve understanding to get to the best solutions, whether that is through media, our public spaces or forms of participation.
