IoT Anything to do with IOT - Raspberry Pi, ESP8266, ESP32 etc., Node-Red, Home Assistant and LOTS of gadgets

You're most likely more interested in what I'm writing about than me - but as Facebook insists - here goes. I've been inolved with technology since I was tiny - pre-teens - while most of my pals were learning the name of football players I was learning about OC45/71/72, OC35, MOSFETs and soon after, who's tape recorder heads were best (Sony Ferrite-Ferrite or Akai Glass-Crystal) - all totally usel

ess knowledge now of course but I'm still learning. Back in the 1980s when black holes were just a theory, that and the multiverse were on my pub-gossip list while getting to grips with (then new) personal computers. Before long I was creating IOT gadgets before the term was invented. If you're bored - there is always THIS - https://www.scargill.net/everything/early-interests/

Oh and I'm happily married with three cats.

Original article November the 5th 2025. Updated today, May the 10th 2026. See the important update at the end. I got an ad this morning for a company selling speech recognition software that claims that now you can type as quickly as you can think. So I’m using it now,…Read More→

Finally finished my first look at the Switchbot S20 Vacuum. Got a bit carried away - the second video is half an hour long :-)

Maybe needs a summary version... having great fun with this IOT gadget

Ok, “remarkable” may or may not be premature – I’m still at the “stunned with my new gadget” stage. This new Switchbot vacuum has auto water refill, waste emptying and 90 day trash disposal intervals (OK, enough of the sales blurb). I just received mine and it is planned to…Read More.....

Updated blog with video and code on the Apollo R-Pro-1 - great device

Have a look at my other Apollo blog entries – this is the latest device – read what it says on their website. Sorry – I just had to steal that promo from their website and no they don’t pay me or even ask for good reviews – so I…Read More→

I think it’s safe to say that mechanically, apart from my articles on 3D-printer kits and Laser Engraver kits – this is going to prove to be one of the more involved blog entries. So firstly, Switchbot sent me the “Switchbot Lock Ultra Touch Combo” and the “Switchbot Keypad Vision”…Rea...

I didn't put this one in the ESP page as it is most likely NOT ESP-based - the new Reolink dual lens camera with 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz WiFi.

No ordinary Security camera, this one. The Reolink Elite WiFi has TWO lenses and operates on either 2.4Ghz WiFi or 5Ghz WiFi. It works using it’s own power supply which outputs 12vDC. The lead (12v) is quite long but Reolink supply an extension lead for larger installations. In most of…Read More...

After an interesting week that included one of my smartplugs failing (turning on a loud fan at midnight) I’m pleased to say the above-named plug has arrived. The troublesome plug was a Meross MSS310 – though as it turns out, after I decided to investigate cosmic rays, the supposedly duff…Read ...

Thsnk to less than sterling service here in deepest southern Spain I've been learning all about using Ping testing and made some devices inc. ESP8266 and ESP32 - check out here..

I recently flashed a pair of Super-Mini ESP32-S3 boards using the online Tasmota flasher here. As I had no need for Bluetooth I went straight for the standard Tasmota (ENGLISH) option – which for anyone who doesn’t know, somehow works automatically for both ESP8266 and some ESP32 boards (ESP32-C...

The ESP32 goes from strength to strength - Seed have just released a marvelous (on first testing) breathing and heart rate monitor - kept me busy all afternoon -

Billed as a “Breathing and Heart Rate Sensor (reference MR60BHA2)” this new device from Seeed has me excited…. the device arrived in a well-packed large box maybe 10cm*9cm*13cm. Inside, a small box (9cm*2.5cm*2.7cm) containing the sensor and a double-sided business card pointing the buyer to ....

Just a quick end-of-2024 shout-out for 1NCE - after all this time my 1nce SIM continues to function well where all other attempts at obtaining a one-off dirt-cheap SIM to run a single smart power outlet have failed. I wrote about this SIM and recently updated the entry after checking out the rest to no avail..

It's been a quiet Christmas (writing-wise) as I'm back in the UK for eye ops (cataracts) which limits my reviewing abilities a little until I get the after-op tests and hence new lens prescriptions - bear with me...

I've ordered new "proper" broadband for the UK but as you may imagine, typical of UK Internet providers especially during holiday periods,, though we "went live" on Xmas eve as promised, we may as well not have - as the modem that came with the deal and which was supposed to arive about mid-December has failed to materialise.

Meanwhile, happy new year to my subscribers in here...

December 2024 update Do you have an IOT setup and maybe no WiFi – do you want a SIM card so you can attach it to a cheap 3G/4G modem (or an old or new phone for that matter) to do nothing but send a small amount of data (and…Read More→
