I thought I knew everything about branding.

Since I entered this field, I've been watching YouTube videos, following the most successful brand builders, and taking notes from their valuable content.

When some of them suggested a book to read, I told myself:
"What are these books supposed to say more?! I know everything about branding. They will surely say what the professionals already said! I'm not gonna read them. I already have the insights."

And here's the thing: once I gave them a try and actually read them, I realized how much valuable insight and information they provide that isn't available, at least for free, on the internet.

For example, in "The Brand Gap" by Neumeier: before I read it, all I knew was that the logo isn't your brand. One is like your suit, the other is like your personality.

But in this book, Neumeier introduced a term that was new to me: "the charismatic brand." Once I read it, my mind was blown. A charismatic brand is a brand for which consumers believe there is no alternative or substitute.

That's the point where many brand designers get stuck, they're just designing "good stuff," but in some cases, this "looking-good" brand doesn't actually match the strategy.

For that reason, I now start with the strategy first, then market research, then a competitor audit, and only then do I sketch the logo and visual elements that resonate and align with the strategy, not just "making it look good."

You've been calling your brand's tagline a slogan. (Or the other way around.)

Tagline = your brand's identity. Permanent. Doesn't change with campaigns.

Slogan = your brand's current pitch. Temporary. Built for one push.
Nike's "Just Do It" โ†’ tagline (30+ years).

One question tells you which one you're looking at:
Is it describing who the brand IS, or what it's offering right now?
Save this before your next brand shoot โ€” you'll need it. ๐Ÿ“Œ
Tag the founder who's been mixing these up. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Your logo isn't the problem.
Most brands invest in design before they invest in clarity. And then wonder why nothing sticks.
Positioning first. Everything else follows.

If I had to start graphic design from scratch, this book would be my first weapon. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

"100 Things Every Designer Needs to Know About People" is where psychology meets design โ€” and once you see it, you can't unsee it.

Here's what hit me hardest from just the first chapter:
Your eyes don't start with details. They begin with a quick overall impression โ€” the composition, the visual balance, the rhythm. Then comes the analysing. That's why simple logos feel cleaner. That's why visual hierarchy isn't optional, it's the whole game. The more your designs rely on science, not just art, the smarter and more effective they become.

๐Ÿ“Œ Save this โ€” you'll want to come back to it mid-project.
Which part surprised you more: the simplicity insight or the peripheral vision one? ๐Ÿ‘‡
