Google's AI, Gemini, now recommends products directly. And it has one big advantage that most stores ignore.

Gemini is connected to Google's giant shopping system. That means it already knows about your products, but only if you feed it good data.

Here is how to get picked by Gemini, in plain steps.

- Get your Google Merchant Center feed right. This is the data Google already has about your products. If it is incomplete or out of date, Gemini works with bad information.
- Match your feed to your product pages. If your feed says one thing and your page says another, Google trusts you less. Keep titles, prices, and details the same in both places.
- Fill in every product detail. Brand, product type, size, color, material, and the product codes (GTIN and MPN). The more complete your data, the more confident Gemini is in recommending you.
- Keep prices and stock current. Nothing kills trust faster than recommending a product that is sold out or priced wrong.
- Earn good reviews. Google weighs ratings heavily. Real reviews with real detail help you stand out.
The good news. If you already run Google Shopping, you are halfway there. You just need to treat your feed as the thing that feeds AI, not just ads.

Clean feed in. Better recommendations out.

We have covered a lot in this series. Here is everything in one simple checklist you can actually use. Save this post.

YOUR PRODUCT PAGES

1. Clear title that matches how people ask for your product.
2. A first line that says who the product is for.
3. Specs in a simple, easy-to-read list.
4. Honest reviews with real detail.

YOUR DATA

5. Prices and stock always current.
6. Product codes filled in (GTIN, MPN, SKU).
7. Your feed matches your product pages.

YOUR PRESENCE

8. Mentioned in the right subreddits and review sites.
9. Content that answers real "best X for Y" questions.
10. Consistent details everywhere shoppers and AI look.

YOUR HABIT

11. Check your top categories in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity each month.
12. See who gets recommended. Fix the gaps. Repeat.

That is the whole system. None of it is magic. It is just clear, complete, and consistent work, done steadily.

If doing all of this by hand sounds like a lot, that is exactly why we built AEOsome. We track where you show up, audit your pages, tell you what to fix, and prove it worked. So you can focus on running your store.

Your shelf is being decided right now. Make sure your store is on it.

Here is something most store owners do not realize. Reddit might be one of the most important places for your brand right now. Not for traffic. For AI.

AI tools like Perplexity and ChatGPT lean on Reddit a lot. When someone asks for a product recommendation, the AI often checks what real people said in Reddit threads. It treats Reddit as honest, human opinion.

So if your product is being discussed in the right subreddit, you have a real shot at being recommended. If it is never mentioned, you are invisible in those answers.

Here is how to use this the right way.

- Find the subreddits where your buyers hang out. Every niche has them. Skincare, coffee gear, home office, pet supplies, you name it.
- Be genuinely helpful. Answer questions. Share knowledge. Do not spam links. People and moderators can smell an ad instantly, and it backfires.
- Let happy customers do the talking. Honest reviews and mentions from real users carry the most weight, with both people and AI.
- Watch what gets asked. The questions people ask on Reddit are the exact questions they ask AI. That is free market research.
This is not about gaming the system. It is about showing up where real conversations happen, because that is where AI looks.

Quiet on Reddit often means quiet in AI answers.

One day you search your main product category on Google, and there it is. A big AI answer at the top, recommending products. Maybe yours. Maybe not.

This is happening across more and more categories every month. And when it happens to yours, the rules change overnight.
Here is what an AI answer at the top actually does.

It pushes the normal results down. Even if you rank number one, you are now below the AI box. Fewer people scroll that far.

It picks a handful of products to feature. If you are in that handful, great. If not, you lost visibility you used to have.

It answers the shopper's question for them. Many people never click anything. They read the AI summary and move on or buy from it directly.

So what do you do about it?

First, do not panic. This is a shift, not the end. Stores are still selling, just through a new front door.

Second, focus on being one of the products the AI features. That comes from the same work we talk about all the time. Clean data, clear pages, real mentions, honest reviews.

Third, check your own categories now. Search them. See if an AI answer has appeared. See who got picked. That tells you exactly where you stand.

The category answer is coming for everyone eventually. Better to be ready than surprised.

Here is the most common reason an AI engine ignores your product.

It is not your copy. It is not your reviews. It is your identifiers.

Specifically: GTIN, MPN, and SKU.

These three fields are how an AI engine confirms that the product you are selling is a real, identifiable item that exists in the world.

When those fields are missing or inconsistent, the AI cannot verify the product, and the safest move for the model is to recommend something else.

What each one does.

GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) This is the universal product code. UPC, EAN, ISBN — they all roll up to GTIN. If your product is manufactured at scale, it has one. If you do not include it, AI engines treat your listing as unverified.

MPN (Manufacturer Part Number) The code the manufacturer uses internally. Essential for branded products, replacement parts, and anything where the same SKU is sold across multiple retailers. Without MPN, AI cannot match your listing to industry databases.

SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) Your internal identifier. Less critical for AI, but required for schema completeness and for handling variants cleanly.

The fastest audit you can run today.

Pick your top 10 SKUs by revenue. Open each product page. View source. Search for "gtin", "mpn", "sku" in the structured data.

If any of those fields are missing on any of those products, that is your highest-leverage fix this quarter. It is technical, unglamorous, and worth more than any blog post you could write.

Get this right and AI starts trusting your catalog. Skip it and you are guessing why your conversions are flat.

If you run a Shopify store, here is the entire 2026 SEO field guide in one post. Save it.

THE 10 THINGS THAT ACTUALLY MOVE THE NEEDLE

- AUDIT YOUR THEME'S SCHEMA OUTPUT Most Shopify themes nail Product schema and miss GTIN, MPN, and AggregateRating. View source on your top product. Confirm or fix.
- WRITE PRODUCT TITLES FOR QUERIES, NOT KEYWORDS "Wireless noise-canceling headphones, under 200 dollars" beats "Premium Pro Max Headphones Elite Series."
- USE METAFIELDS TO ADD STRUCTURED ATTRIBUTES Material, dimensions, use case, audience. Then expose them in schema. Shopify makes this easier than most platforms.
- REWRITE YOUR TOP 20 PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONS First paragraph: who this is for. Then specs as a table. Then FAQ pulled from support tickets.
- INSTALL A REVIEW APP THAT OUTPUTS SCHEMA Judge.me, Loox, Stamped — pick one that emits proper Review and AggregateRating markup. Verify it actually does.
- CLEAN YOUR GOOGLE MERCHANT CENTER FEED Title parity with your product pages. Complete identifiers. Full descriptions, not stripped ones.
- BUILD ONE PIECE OF COMPARISON CONTENT PER QUARTER "Yours vs the alternatives" honest comparison content. This is where AI engines pull from heavily.
- GET MENTIONED ON REDDIT IN YOUR CATEGORY Not spam. Real participation in the relevant subreddit. Perplexity weights Reddit heavily, and ChatGPT increasingly does too.
- MONITOR YOUR AI VISIBILITY MONTHLY Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Bing Copilot the queries your shoppers actually use. Track who they recommend.
- CONNECT YOUR STORE TO AEOSOME We automate the parts of this that are too painful to do manually at scale. Product page audits, AI mention tracking, citation monitoring, and verified lift after every change.
That is the entire system. 9 things you can do this month, and 1 layer that holds it all together.

Your shelf is being decided right now. Make sure your store is on it.

A shopper asks ChatGPT: "What is the best running shoe for flat feet under 150 dollars?"

In about 4 seconds, ChatGPT returns 3 to 5 products with reasoning.

What just happened inside that 4 seconds is the most important distribution channel decision in eCommerce right now. Here is the sequence.

STEP 1: QUERY EXPANSION The model does not search the phrase you typed. It expands it into roughly 10 to 30 related questions: arch support, brand reputation, return policy, sizing, common complaints, durability. This is called query fan-out.

STEP 2: SOURCE RETRIEVAL For each expanded question, the model pulls from sources it trusts. The hierarchy in eCommerce is roughly:

- Product pages with complete structured data
- Bing Shopping feed (yes, ChatGPT reads Bing, not Google)
- Reddit threads in the relevant subreddit
- Niche review sites and comparison content
- Retailer-aggregated review databases
-
STEP 3: CROSS-REFERENCING The model looks for products mentioned in multiple sources. A product recommended in 3 trusted places beats one recommended in 1. This is why citations matter more than backlinks.

STEP 4: ATTRIBUTE FILTERING The model filters by the constraints in the query. "Under 150 dollars" eliminates products without a clean price in their schema. "For flat feet" eliminates products that do not mention arch support in their content.

STEP 5: SHORTLISTING The final 3 to 5 products with the best evidence get returned with a one-line reason each.
The brands that make that shortlist consistently are not the loudest ones. They are the ones with the cleanest data, the most third-party mentions, and the most specific content.

Make yourself easy to recommend. The rest is math.

Your Google Merchant Center feed is not just for Shopping ads anymore. It is one of the most important inputs into how AI engines understand your catalog.

Here is the connection most stores miss.

THE PIPELINE:
- Your product data lives on your store.
- A subset gets pushed to Google Merchant Center.
- That feed powers Google Shopping ads and free listings.
- The same feed is increasingly used by Google's AI engines (and by inference, the wider AI ecosystem that scrapes Google) to understand product attributes, availability, and price.
If your feed is incomplete or misaligned with your on-site data, you are sending two different stories to the same recommendation engine.

WHAT TO AUDIT:
- Title parity. Your Merchant Center title should match your product page title structure. AI flags inconsistency.
- Description depth. Many stores send a stripped-down feed description that loses the buying context. Send the full one.
- Identifier completeness. GTIN, MPN, brand, product type. Missing fields here ripple into AI visibility.
- Image quality and dimensions. AI vision models parse product images. Low-res or cropped product shots reduce confidence.
- Custom labels. Use them to tag bestsellers, evergreen products, and high-margin items. This helps you control which products get emphasized.
- Price and availability accuracy. Out-of-date prices in the feed make you look untrustworthy.

THE TAKEAWAY:

A clean, complete, accurate Merchant Center feed is one of the highest-leverage AEO assets you have. Most stores treat it as a Shopping ad input. Treat it as a recommendation engine input.

Schema markup is not a checklist. It is a hierarchy. And most stores get the hierarchy wrong.

Here is what to do first, second, third for eCommerce schema, ranked by what actually moves AI recommendations.

TIER 1 — NON-NEGOTIABLES Product (with name, description, image) Offer (with price, priceCurrency, availability) Brand AggregateRating (only if you have real reviews — never fake this)

If any of these are missing on a SKU, the AI engine cannot reliably represent the product. This is the floor.

TIER 2 — TRUST BUILDERS GTIN, MPN, SKU Review (individual reviews with author, rating, body) Manufacturer
These confirm the product exists, can be matched to industry databases, and has real validation. Adding these is where most stores see the biggest AI visibility lift.

TIER 3 — CONTEXT EXPANDERS Audience (who the product is for) Material, color, size as proper variant attributes ItemCondition isAccessoryOrSparePartFor (if applicable)

These help AI engines match your product to specific shopper constraints. "For runners with flat feet" only works if Audience is structured, not buried in prose.

TIER 4 — ADVANCED isVariantOf (for clean variant handling) isRelatedTo (for cross-sells) Energy efficiency, certifications, country of origin

Most stores never get past Tier 1, which is why most stores struggle with AI visibility.

If you are on Shopify, your theme probably handles Tier 1 automatically and gets Tier 2 wrong. That is the single highest-leverage technical audit you can run.

eCommerce SEO is not dead. It just got more honest.

After 18 months of watching AI Overviews, ChatGPT Shopping, and Perplexity reshape how shoppers find products, here is the cleanest framework we have for what to do about it.

KEEP DOING:
- Site speed and Core Web Vitals. AI crawlers still rely on the underlying web.
- Internal linking from category pages to product pages. Helps both Google and answer engines understand your catalog hierarchy.
- Reviews and review schema. AI engines weight third-party validation heavily.
- Long-tail informational content. Still drives top-of-funnel traffic.
- Brand SEO. Your branded queries are now even more valuable because they convert better.
KILL:- Keyword stuffing in product titles. AI flattens this and downranks it.
- Generic homepage SEO copy nobody reads. Move that real estate to structured product data.
- Mass-produced AI blog content with no expert input. AI engines have gotten good at recognizing this and excluding it from answers.
- Backlinks for the sake of backlinks. Citations from trusted sources in your category are worth ten generic links.

ADD:- Complete product schema on every SKU (Product, Offer, Brand, AggregateRating, plus identifiers like GTIN and MPN).
- Real comparison content. Yours vs the alternatives, written honestly.
- A monitoring system that tracks whether you are being mentioned in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Bing Copilot, and Google AI Overviews.
- Owned authority on Reddit and niche communities in your category.

SEO is not the wrong word. The S just stands for something a little different now.
