Something new is coming to jv16 PowerTools 9: a feature called Launcher.

Launcher lives in the Finder tool, which runs on the same engine as our free WinFindr search tool.

Launcher adds a simpler way to use the Finder tool: type a few letters, and open an app or a file right away. You can also create your own commands and put them on buttons, so the things you do often are one click away.

Don't worry, the detailed search screen you know stays the same. You can easily switch between Launcher and Normal modes in a single click.

Launcher is coming to jv16 PowerTools version 9 this fall, before going to the next WinFindr update.

Hello everyone!

jv16 PowerTools 9 is coming this fall, and it will include four new tools. Today, we're sharing a first look at three of them:

🧹 App Cleaner removes the traces your programs leave behind, such as lists of recently opened files.

🌐 Browser Cleaner clears your web browsing history. You choose what to remove and what to keep.

🔒 Private File Finder helps you find old files that may contain personal information, such as email addresses or credit card numbers.

The work on jv16 PowerTools version 9 continues, and here is what we have been doing.

The new dashboard uses soft, muted colors by default. It looks calm, which is what we wanted. But calm is not always readable. That depends on your screen, your lighting, and your eyes, and we do not control two of those three.

So version 9 will have two high-contrast settings. One makes the dashboard charts and legend colors stronger. The other does the same for the navigation menu on the left. They are separate; you can turn on one, both, or neither.

And if your Windows is already set to a high-contrast color scheme, both switch on automatically. You have already told your computer what you need, and we should not make you say it twice.

The pictures show the same dashboard four ways: normal and high contrast, in both dark mode and light mode. The clearest difference is the disk usage bar along the bottom. In the normal version, the file type bands blend into each other. In the high-contrast version, you can actually tell where the documents end and the videos begin.

These are previews of work still in progress, so details may change. jv16 PowerTools version 9 is coming this fall, and we will let you know when it is ready.

We are still working on jv16 PowerTools version 9, and today we would like to show you what it looks like. These are preview pictures of the new design. The finished version 9 will be available this fall.

The biggest change is the icons. The old ones were colorful, which looks nice in a picture, but they pull your eye all over the screen when you are trying to get something done. The new icons are simpler and calmer, in both the normal light view and the dark view.

If you liked the old icons on the main screen, do not worry. They are simply switched off to begin with, and you can turn them back on in Settings whenever you like.

We have also made the drive space bars a single color instead of many. It is now much easier to see at a glance how full your drive is.

We have some news about jv16 PowerTools!

The long-overdue update is now being worked on, and the biggest changes are under the hood. Two of the tools are being rebuilt on newer code:

🔹 Software Uninstaller is being rebuilt on the latest Uninstalr code
🔹 Finder is being rebuilt on the latest WinFindr code

This is not a simple copy-paste. A large part of the work is making sure the new code plays nicely with the rest of jv16 PowerTools, which is a considerably older program with its own opinions about how things should be done.

We are also adding improvements along the way that are not yet in the standalone apps. So they will appear in jv16 PowerTools first, and reach Uninstalr and WinFindr later on.

One of those improvements is speed. We know - it is the single most common piece of feedback we get, and it has been for years. So we made it a priority. The new Software Uninstaller will be noticeably faster than the version you are using today.

We will be sharing development updates as the work progresses: what is being built, what broke, and what took three attempts.

Uninstalr 3.2 is out!

Here's what's new:

* Faster scans. On one of our test systems with almost 200 apps installed, scans went from 114 seconds to 58 seconds on the first run, and from 13 seconds to 8 seconds on repeat runs.
* You can now open Settings before the scan finishes, so you can exclude a drive or switch off a scan mode without waiting for the whole scan.
* Improved uninstallation accuracy, fewer prompts, and a good round of bug fixes.

The engine behind these improvements is heading into jv16 PowerTools next as the new Software Uninstaller tool, so this is a preview of what's coming.

Uninstalr 3.1 is out.

It took over three months, 139 test builds, and 14 release candidates to get here.

Here's what changed:

⚡ Repeat scans are quicker and lighter. On one test system with 173 installed apps, the second scan dropped from 23 seconds to 12 seconds, and memory usage fell from 430 MB to 281 MB.

⏳ A deeper first scan. Uninstalr 3.1 digs harder for portable apps than earlier versions did, and that extra digging takes time - so the first scan may take a little longer than it used to. If you'd rather have the speed, you can switch off the portable app scan in Settings.

📦 Much better portable app detection. Portable apps never register themselves with Windows, so most uninstallers don't even try to find them. Uninstalr 3.1 handles single-file portables, deeply nested folders, and launcher ecosystems like PortableApps.com and NirSoft.

🔍 Apps that start with Windows are now highlighted. Startup apps are the usual reason a computer feels slower every year. Uninstalr shows you which ones they are. Whether you keep them is entirely your call.

🌍 Country of origin, now highlighted. Since version 3.0, Uninstalr has shown you where each of your installed apps comes from, and it works on your own PC without contacting any server. As far as we know, no other uninstaller does this. In version 3.1, software from certain countries is highlighted in red, in case you'd rather avoid it. This can also be switched off in Settings.

A small update, and a small favor at the end.

Uninstalr 3.1 has reached the release-candidate stage, which means the heavy lifting is behind us. It's passed its first round of QA and is now in the final testing stage. Once it's properly out the door, jv16 PowerTools is what we most want to turn to next. We're deliberately not putting a date on that - the last stretch of any release has a habit of eating more time than we'd like - but that's where our attention is headed, and we haven't forgotten the people who've stuck with jv16 the longest.

Now the favor.
