Uninstalr 3.2 is out!

Here's what's new:

* Faster scans. On one of our test systems with almost 200 apps installed, scans went from 114 seconds to 58 seconds on the first run, and from 13 seconds to 8 seconds on repeat runs.
* You can now open Settings before the scan finishes, so you can exclude a drive or switch off a scan mode without waiting for the whole scan.
* Improved uninstallation accuracy, fewer prompts, and a good round of bug fixes.

The engine behind these improvements is heading into jv16 PowerTools next as the new Software Uninstaller tool, so this is a preview of what's coming.

Uninstalr 3.1 is out.

It took over three months, 139 test builds, and 14 release candidates to get here.

Here's what changed:

⚡ Repeat scans are quicker and lighter. On one test system with 173 installed apps, the second scan dropped from 23 seconds to 12 seconds, and memory usage fell from 430 MB to 281 MB.

⏳ A deeper first scan. Uninstalr 3.1 digs harder for portable apps than earlier versions did, and that extra digging takes time - so the first scan may take a little longer than it used to. If you'd rather have the speed, you can switch off the portable app scan in Settings.

📦 Much better portable app detection. Portable apps never register themselves with Windows, so most uninstallers don't even try to find them. Uninstalr 3.1 handles single-file portables, deeply nested folders, and launcher ecosystems like PortableApps.com and NirSoft.

🔍 Apps that start with Windows are now highlighted. Startup apps are the usual reason a computer feels slower every year. Uninstalr shows you which ones they are. Whether you keep them is entirely your call.

🌍 Country of origin, now highlighted. Since version 3.0, Uninstalr has shown you where each of your installed apps comes from, and it works on your own PC without contacting any server. As far as we know, no other uninstaller does this. In version 3.1, software from certain countries is highlighted in red, in case you'd rather avoid it. This can also be switched off in Settings.

A small update, and a small favor at the end.

Uninstalr 3.1 has reached the release-candidate stage, which means the heavy lifting is behind us. It's passed its first round of QA and is now in the final testing stage. Once it's properly out the door, jv16 PowerTools is what we most want to turn to next. We're deliberately not putting a date on that - the last stretch of any release has a habit of eating more time than we'd like - but that's where our attention is headed, and we haven't forgotten the people who've stuck with jv16 the longest.

Now the favor. Ever wonder what goes into a single Uninstalr release? Here's an honest look behind the scenes.

For Uninstalr 3.1, we've built 104 different versions so far. Only 4 of them passed our QA testing well enough to become Release Candidates. Every time a build doesn't make the cut, we scrap it and start fresh.

There were even moments we were 90% sure a build was ready… and it still didn't pass. When that happens, we don't ship it anyway. We'd rather get it right than get it out fast.

A quick Uninstalr 3.1 update - and a candid one

We know some of you were expecting the general public release of Uninstalr 3.1 last week. It didn't happen, and we want to be upfront about why: we were still experiencing speed issues, and since faster uninstallation is one of the key improvements we promised for 3.1, we weren't comfortable releasing it until we resolve that issue.

An Honest Update on Development Priorities: Uninstalr 3.1 and jv16 PowerTools

After releasing Uninstalr 3.0, we immediately started working on the long-overdue jv16 PowerTools major update. Then something happened: we received a significant amount of user feedback about 3.0.

This put us in a familiar position that every developer faces at some point. We had two options:

1️⃣ Continue with jv16 PowerTools and address the Uninstalr feedback later
2️⃣ Pause jv16 PowerTools temporarily to address the feedback now

We chose option 2.

Why did we make this choice?

The feedback was actionable, specific, and would significantly improve Uninstalr. More importantly, the improvements we're making will also benefit the Software Uninstaller tool in jv16 PowerTools when we return to that development.

Where we are now:

We're working as quickly as we can on Uninstalr 3.1, aiming to release it this week. Once it's out, we're immediately returning to jv16 PowerTools with full focus.

We understand that "long overdue" doesn't begin to cover how you feel about the jv16 PowerTools timeline. If you've been waiting months for features you need, we genuinely appreciate your patience.
