Happy 10th Birthday, our dear SmartZone! 🎂
Ten years ago—on 15 May 2015—we spun up our very first Ruckus SmartZone virtual controller. In tech years that’s practically grandfather age, yet our SmartZone still runs like a brand-new athlete: no outages and a flawless upgrade history from day one to today.
When Ruckus launched its groundbreaking virtual controller that May day in 2015, it felt like a paradigm shift. Until then, controllers were always physical boxes—single points of failure and limited redundancy. Moving the brains of the network into a virtual machine suddenly meant we could run it on any hardware, restore from backups in minutes, and scale as we pleased. Ten years on, that decision has paid off: our controller has never missed a beat.
But SmartZone’s hardware independence isn’t the only reason we chose Ruckus. The real secret sauce has always been the RF engineering. BeamFlex adaptive antennas, interference mitigation, Airtime Fairness—call it radio wizardry or black magic; the result is the same: cleaner spectrum, longer reach, and faster, more stable connections than anything else we’ve tested over the years.
We’ve been part of the journey since the VF2111 and ZF2942 era, when Selina Lo was at the helm. The company has evolved; the market has shifted, but what’s always mattered is transparency and a real willingness to listen. You can still bring an idea to top-level people and see it make a difference.
To everyone who’s been part of this journey, thank you: Bart, Mittal, Steve, Steven Broken, Flemming, Marcelo, and a special shout-out to our distributor Sandra for keeping the supply chain flowing and the spirits high.
Our SmartZone may have ten candles on the cake, but it’s still in its prime and ready for another lap around the sun—actually, make that another decade. Here’s to the next ten years of rock-solid uptime and RF dominance. Let’s keep up the good work and push the boundaries together!
